The hydraulic design, computational analysis, and experimental investigations of a high-speed small-scale turbopump for mobile waste heat recovery applications based on organic Rankine cycle systems are presented in this paper. Such applications demand hig ...

Fluidic systems enable actuation in various applications, such as automotive, medical, and industrial robotics. Miniaturized valves constitute a fundamental controlling element of modern fluidic systems, intriguing the interest of many researchers. This le ...

An important feature of turbulent boundary layers are persistent large-scale coherent structures in the flow. Here, we use Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), a data-driven technique designed to detect spatio-temporal coherence, to construct optimal low-dime ...

Segmented micro-CT images of flow fronts produced by UV-flow freezing. Front morphologies correspond to capilary-dominated, equilibrated and viscous-dominated flow regimes. ...

We study viscosity solutions to the classical one-phase problem and its thin counterpart. In low dimensions, we show that when the free boundary is the graph of a continuous function, the solution is the half-plane solution. This answers, in the salient di ...

Nowadays, Liquid Composite Molding techniques are often used to manufacture high quality fiber reinforced composite parts at a relatively low cost. These involve an infiltration process, in which a liquid resin is forced to ingress into a dry fibrous porou ...

We propose a methodology to monitor the progressive saturation of a non-translucent unidirectional carbon fabric stack through its thickness by means of X-ray radiography and extract the dynamic saturation curves using image analysis. Four constant flow ra ...

We study the stability of laminar wakes past three-dimensional rectangular prisms. The width-to-height ratio is set to W/H = 1.2, while the length-to-height ratio 1/6 < L/H < 3 covers a wide range of geometries from thin plates to elongated Ahmed bodies. F ...

One of the barriers to further commercialization of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is hydrogen storage. Conventional methods are based on pressurizing the hydrogen up to 700 bar. The focus of this study is to characterize the hydrogen stora ...

Convection in a layer inclined against gravity is a thermally driven non-equilibrium system, in which both buoyancy and shear forces drive spatio-temporally complex flows. As a function of the strength of thermal driving and the angle of inclination, a mul ...

The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) undergoes substantial changes in its structure and dynamics in the course of a day due to the transient nature of forcing factors such as the surface fluxes of heat and momentum. The non-stationary nature of the mean wi ...

The U.S.-NRC best-estimate system code TRACE adopts a finite volumes, first-order upwind discretization scheme to solve the dissolved-solute convection equation. Such a scheme is known to strongly suffer from numerical diffusion, which can be a significant ...
