Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

In recent years, the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory has been successfully applied for locating various sources of disturbances, such as short-circuit faults, in power systems. In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the feasibility of applyin ...

This paper proposes small-argument approximations for two closed-form equations that were recently derived for the calculation of the ground-return impedance and admittance of underground cables. The proposed expressions are shown to be accurate up to 1 MH ...

In this paper, a rigorous and independent validation of two different approaches for calculating the ground-return impedance and admittance of multiconductor underground cable systems using the transmission line theory is carried out. Furthermore, analyses ...

In this chapter, we discussed the TL theory and its application to the problem of lightning electromagnetic field coupling to transmission lines. After a short discussion on the underlying assumptions of the TL theory, we described seemingly different but ...

A correct representation of the lightning current is crucial when the electromagnetic field radiated to a point of interest has to be computed. Based on the engineering models of Transmission Line type, such representation involves the knowledge of the ret ...

The EU FASTGRID project aimed at improving the REBCO conductor in order to enhance its economical attractiveness for the Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL). Two approaches were simultaneously investigated: i) the reduction of the tape length thro ...

Near-surface disposal of radioactive waste in shales is a promising option to safeguard the population and environment. However, natural faults intersecting these geological formations can potentially affect the long-term isolation of the repositories. Thi ...

Partial discharge (PD) occurrence in power transformers can lead to irreparable damage to the power network. In this paper, the inverse filter (IF) method to localize PDs in power transformers is proposed. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the ...

This article summarizes the electromagnetic time-reversal (EMTR) technique for fault location, and further numerically validates its effectiveness when the fault impedance is negligible. In addition, a specific EMTR model considering the fault impedance is ...

The classical electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) fault location method in power systems can be time consuming, especially when a high location accuracy is desired. To cope with this issue, the concept of EMTR in mismatched media has recently been introdu ...

High-temperature superconductors (HTS) can be superconducting in liquid nitrogen (77 K) at atmospheric pressure, which holds immense promises for our future such as nuclear fusion, compact medical devices and efficient power applications. In a power system ...

A closed time-reversal (TR) cavity has been considered a purely theoretical concept whose experimental realization was assumed to be impossible. In this article, we demonstrate that it is, in fact, possible to realize a closed TR cavity using a network of ...

We present an analysis aimed at evaluating the effect of the presence of the tower on the measurement of the grounding impedance. The Numerical Electromagnetics Code NEC-4 is used for the full-wave modeling of the structure including the tower and its foot ...

Angle and amplitude estimation errors in magnetic direction finding, called site errors, are important sensor-specific errors in lightning location systems (LLS). They are known to be caused by nearby cables and overhead lines due to induced currents. Due ...

Recent trends in shipboard power distribution network design, such as the transition from AC to DC result in new challenges on the issue of distribution network protection. Devices such as a solid state bus tie switch provide a first line of defence agains ...

The paper discusses specific frequency-domain properties of the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) method applied to locate faults and, more in general, disturbances in power networks. Specifically, we investigate the properties of two transfer functions ...

This paper presents demonstration of a protection scheme integrated into marine DC power distribution networks to investigate the coordination between each protection action. The integrated protection scheme is based on three different time-frame protectio ...

Electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) has emerged as a promising technique to locate disturbances in power grids, thanks to its location accuracy and robustness against parameters uncertainties. Furthermore, in a reflective medium, like the one of a power n ...

The time-reversal invariance is readily described and universally embodied in most laws of nature, either in a strict or in a soft sense. Based on this underlying physical principle, time-reversal theory has been theoretically and experimentally studied in ...
