Phase shifts induced by transient Bloch-Siegert effects in NMR

Résumé

It is shown by simulation and expt. that selective pulses designed to invert or excite magnetization over a limited frequency window induce significant phase shifts over a bandwidth much larger than the chosen window. These phase shifts affect all expts. where selective pulses are used after exciting transverse magnetization or generally p-quantum coherence. The phase shifts may be compensated by modifying the phases of the rf pulses during the expts. or in some cases by suitable data transformations. [on SciFinder (R)]

Phase response curve

A phase response curve (PRC) illustrates the transient change (phase response) in the cycle period of an oscillation induced by a perturbation as a function of the phase at which it is received. PRCs are used in various fields; examples of biological oscillations are the heartbeat, circadian rhythms, and the regular, repetitive firing observed in some neurons in the absence of noise. In humans and animals, there is a regulatory system that governs the phase relationship of an organism's internal circadian clock to a regular periodicity in the external environment (usually governed by the solar day).

Cet instrument fut développé par le physicien hollandais Frederik Zernike dans les années 1930, ce qui lui valut le prix Nobel de physique en 1953. Emilie Bleeker, physicienne reconnue pour le développement d'instruments, est la première à mettre le microscope à contraste de phase en utilisation.

Quantitative phase-contrast microscopy

FORCETOC Quantitative phase contrast microscopy or quantitative phase imaging are the collective names for a group of microscopy methods that quantify the phase shift that occurs when light waves pass through a more optically dense object. Translucent objects, like a living human cell, absorb and scatter small amounts of light. This makes translucent objects much easier to observe in ordinary light microscopes. Such objects do, however, induce a phase shift that can be observed using a phase contrast microscope.
