We present a discriminative clustering approach in which the feature representation can be learned from data and moreover leverage labeled data. Representation learning can give a similarity-based clustering method the ability to automatically adapt to an ...

With the emergence of social networks and improvements in the internet speed, the video data has become an ever-increasing portion of the global internet traffic. Besides the content, the quality of a video sequence is an important issue at the user end wh ...

Overview Cough audio signal classification has been successfully used to diagnose a variety of respiratory conditions, and there has been significant interest in leveraging Machine Learning (ML) to provide widespread COVID-19 screening. Th ...

Makeup is a simple and easy instrument that can alter the appearance of a person’s face, and hence, create a presentation attack on face recognition (FR) systems. These attacks, especially the ones mimicking ageing, are difficult to detect due to their clo ...

A large part of computer vision research is devoted to building models and algorithms aimed at understanding human appearance and behaviour from images and videos. Ultimately, we want to build automated systems that are at least as capable as people when i ...

With the development of neural networks based machine learning and their usage in mission critical applications, voices are rising against the \textit{black box} aspect of neural networks as it becomes crucial to understand their limits and capabilities. W ...

Automatic visual speech recognition is an interesting problem in pattern recognition especially when audio data is noisy or not readily available. It is also a very challenging task mainly because of the lower amount of information in the visual articulati ...

Goal: Difficult tracheal intubation is a major cause of anesthesia related injuries with potential life threatening complications. Detection and anticipation of difficult airway in the preoperative period is thus crucial for the patients’ safety. We propos ...

Device for testing a material response, such as a tissue response, to a compound; said device comprising material impedance measuring means which are adapted to measure the material impedance at the compound action site. ...

This paper presents the results of a series of shake-table tests on a half-scale, four-storey building with reinforced concrete (RC) and unreinforced masonry (URM) walls. Due to the lack of reference tests, the seismic behaviour of such mixed structures is ...

This paper presents an evaluation of verification and calibration performance of a face recognition system based on inter-session variability modeling. As an extension to the calibration through linear transformation of scores, categorical calibration is i ...

Background: Pattern recognition (PR) based strategies for the control of myoelectric upper limb prostheses are generally evaluated through offline classification accuracy, which is an admittedly useful metric, but insufficient to discuss functional perform ...

A natural and intuitive operation of multifunctional upper limb prostheses involves the concurrent activation of multiple degrees of freedom in a proportional way. Several approaches to simultaneous and proportional control strategies have been investigate ...

This paper investigates robust privacy-sensitive audio features for speaker diarization in multiparty conversations: ie., a set of audio features having low linguistic information for speaker diarization in a single and multiple distant microphone scenario ...

We propose a novel framework for noise robust automatic speech recognition (ASR) based on cochlear implant-like spectrally reduced speech (SRS). Two experimental protocols (EPs) are proposed in order to clarify the advantage of using SRS for noise robust A ...

The work described in this thesis takes place in the context of capturing real-life audio for the analysis of spontaneous social interactions. Towards this goal, we wish to capture conversational and ambient sounds using portable audio recorders. Analysis ...

In this thesis, we propose a novel approach for speaker and speech recognition involving localized, binary, data-driven features. The proposed approach is largely inspired by similar localized approaches in the computer vision domain. The success of these ...

Context and activity recognition in complex scenarios is prone to data loss due to disconnections, sensor failure, transmission problems, etc. This generally implies significant changes in the recognition performance. In the case of classifier fusion fault ...

This thesis focuses on the decisional process of autonomous systems, and more particularly, on the way to take a decision when the time at disposal in order to assess the whole situation is shorter than necessary. Indeed, numerous systems propose solutions ...
