Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

Heat transport is an important, though often neglected function of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Thermal conductivity is a key property, especially in partially water saturated GDLs and when the phase change of wat ...

A controlled manipulation of graphene edges and vacancies is desired for molecular separation, sensing and electronics applications. Unfortunately, available etching methods always lead to vacancy nucleation making it challenging to control etching. Herein ...

Electrification of the energy section, from generation to end-use, plays an essential role in reducing global CO2 emission. Innovations in power electronics are required to increase conversion efficiency and power density. Gallium nitride (GaN) transistors ...

Recent progress in understanding thermal transport in complex crystals has highlighted the prominent role of heat conduction mediated by interband tunneling processes, which emerge between overlapping phonon bands (i.e., with energy differences smaller tha ...

A well-designed ventilated wall that incorporates air-space behind cladding can reduce energy use for conditioning buildings by adding a thermally resistive layer. The scarcity of thermal performance data and standardized test methods is a particular barri ...

The LHCb VELO Upgrade I, currently being installed for the 2022 start of LHC Run 3, uses silicon microchannel coolers with internally circulating bi-phase CO2 for thermal control of hybrid pixel modules operating in vacuum. This is the largest scale applic ...

Among numerous thin film synthesis methods, metalorganic chemical vapor deposition performed in a showerhead reactor is the most promising one for broad use in scalable and commercially adaptable two-dimensional material synthesis processes. Adapting the m ...

Understanding the origins of intrinsic stress in Si nanowires (NWs) is crucial for their successful utilization as transducer building blocks in next-generation, miniaturized sensors based on nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). With their small size lead ...

Multimode fibers (MMF) were initially developed to transmit digital information encoded in the time domain. There were few attempts in the late 60s and 70s to transmit analog images through MMF. With the availability of digital spatial modulators, practica ...

Phonon-assisted luminescence is a key property of defect centers in semiconductors, and can be measured to perform the readout of the information stored in a quantum bit, or to detect temperature variations. The investigation of phonon-assisted luminescenc ...

The fabrication of high-hardness non-hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) via standard magnetron sputtering (MS) is often hindered by the low sputtering yields and ionisation rates of carbon, therefore investigations into pulsed alternatives of MS, else ...

Particle production induced by a time-dependent background is well understood as the projection of the time-evolved initial state onto a set of final states. While the asymptotic initial and final states are well defined in the usual way, the definition of ...

In the last decades, the femtosecond laser micromachining of glass has attracted a lot of attention due to its three-dimensional manufacturing ability and flexibility both in terms of compatible substrates and modification types. Yet, to fully unravel its ...
