Extensive research has been conducted on fault diagnosis of planetary gearboxes using vibration signals and deep learning (DL) approaches. However, DL-based methods are susceptible to the domain shift problem caused by varying operating conditions of the g ...

Objective. Powered lower-limb prostheses relying on decoding motor intentions from non-invasive sensors, like electromyographic (EMG) signals, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputee subjects. However, the optimal combination of high decod ...

We enable the estimation of the per-axon axial diffusivity from single encoding, strongly diffusion-weighted, pulsed gradient spin echo data. Additionally, we improve the estimation of the per-axon radial diffusivity compared to estimates based on spherica ...

Residential ventilative cooling via natural ventilation is influenced by outdoor air pollution. However, relative to climate, outdoor air pollution is not comprehensively considered in determining the ventilative cooling potential of buildings. To assess t ...

We investigate the persistence of micro-contacts between two elastic random rough surfaces by means of a simple model for quasi-static sliding. Contact clusters are calculated with the Boundary Element Method, then surfaces are repeatedly displaced to stud ...

We perform a combined experimental and computational investigation of the clove hitch knot. We develop a physical model for the clove hitch by tying an elastic rod onto a rigid cylinder. In the experiments, we characterize the mechanical performance, geome ...

The role of deep defects and their physical origin in InGaN/GaN LED are still widely investigated and debated, in particular their impact on the electrical and optical characteristics and on the reliability of the device. In this paper we evaluate the elec ...

Energy tunnels allow the harvesting of untapped heat at shallow depths in the underground to meet the thermal energy requirements of buildings and infrastructures over large areas. Such heat can derive from two sources: the ground surrounding energy tunnel ...

The mechanical behaviours of unsaturated soils are highly related to the water content and pore water and air distributions. Under the context of climate change, geo-disasters related to soil moisture change attract more and more research attentions. Due t ...

We propose a fast and scalable Polyatomic Frank-Wolfe (P-FW) algorithm for the resolution of high-dimensional LASSO regression problems. The latter improves upon traditional Frank-Wolfe methods by considering generalized greedy steps with polyatomic (i.e. ...

The forms of U-shaped UHPFRC beams have not been investigated for the highway footbridge. Compared with the traditional section forms, the U-shaped UHPFRC beams can reduce the material consumption under the condition of providing the same bearing capacity. ...

The paper contributes to improving the computational performance of controls of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution grids for efficient real-time control and short-term scheduling. The considered setting is a distribution grid with heteroge ...

Objective. Optic nerve's intraneural stimulation is an emerging neuroprosthetic approach to provide artificial vision to totally blind patients. An open question is the possibility to evoke individual non-overlapping phosphenes via selective intraneural op ...

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), also called perovskite nanocrystals, are considered as one of the most promising classes of photovoltaic materials for solar cells due to their prominent optoelectronic properties and simple preparation technique ...

We demonstrate sub-nanosecond wavelength switching, using a chip-based soliton microcomb and a semiconductor optical amplifier-based wavelength selector. 50-Gbps PAM4 transmission is achieved with discrete components and 25-Gbps NRZ with a photonic integra ...

In social learning, agents form their opinions or beliefs about certain hypotheses by exchanging local information. This work considers the recent paradigm of weak graphs, where the network is partitioned into sending and receiving components, with the for ...

A reliable novel monitoring approach is developed to assess the structural condition of reinforced-concrete bridge elements. The approach is based on combining acoustic emission technique and strain gauge measurements, and it is illustrated by a case study ...

Making decisions is part and parcel of being human. Among a set of actions, we want to choose the one that has the highest reward. But the uncertainty of the outcome prevents us from always making the right decision. Making decisions under uncertainty can ...

This work presents and studies a distributed algorithm for solving optimization problems over networks where agents have individual costs to minimize subject to subspace constraints that require the minimizers across the network to lie in a low-dimensional ...
