Electro-optical photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on lithium niobate (LiNbO3) have demonstrated the vast capabilities of materials with a high Pockels coefficient1,2. They enable linear and high-speed modulators operating at complementary metal–oxi ...

Chip -scale optical frequency combs enable the generation of highly -coherent pulsed light at gigahertz-level repetition rates, with potential technological impact ranging from telecommunications to sensing and spectroscopy. In combination with techniques ...

Integrated quantum photonics leverages the on-chip generation of nonclassical states of light to realize key functionalities of quantum devices. Typically, the generation of such nonclassical states relies on whispering gallery mode resonators, such as int ...

Modern integrated circuits are tiny yet incredibly complex technological artifacts, composed of millions and billions of individual structures working in unison. Managing their complexity and facilitating their design drove part of the co-evolution of mode ...

Redox homeostasis is a key factor in maintaining cellular function and health. The main determinant of the intracellular redox potential is ubiquitous glutathione (GSH) together with its oxidized dimer (GSSG). Importantly, both redox equilibrium and GSH ho ...

Exploring a wide range of design options is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. In the conventional structural design workflow, optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing design options. However, focusing only ...

Activity-based models offer the potential of a far deeper understanding of daily mobility behaviour than trip-based models. However, activity-based models used both in research and practice have often relied on applying sequential choice models between sub ...

Over the last decades, the progress made in the generation of laser pulses shorter than a picosecond (10^-12 s) has allowed us to reach extreme optical power intensities exceeding 10^15 W cm^-2. This tremendous power has triggered an abundance of original ...

Winged aerial robots and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) commonly referred to as winged drones and drones, are increasingly used in a wide range of professional and non-professional applications today, spanning from civilian to military. As a result, they ...

This work proposes a method for optimal planning (sizing and siting) energy storage systems (ESSs) in power distribution grids while considering the option of curtailing photo-voltaic (PV) generation. More specifically, for a given PV generation capacity t ...

Background: Simulating the cardiac function requires the numerical solution of multi-physics and multi-scale mathematical models. This underscores the need for streamlined, accurate, and high-performance computational tools. Despite the dedicated endeavors ...

Mainstream approaches to design spatial architectural forms that are structurally relevant consist either in adapting well-known and catalogued conventional types or in searching for close-to-optimum solutions of well-defined problems. Few means exist to e ...

This paper presents a novel simulation approach for generating synthetic households, addressing several literature gaps from the methodological viewpoint. The generation of hierarchical datasets such as complete households is challenging since it must guar ...

In this paper, we consider the first eigenvalue.1(O) of the Grushin operator.G :=.x1 + |x1|2s.x2 with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain O of Rd = R d1+ d2. We prove that.1(O) admits a unique minimizer in the class of domains with prescribed ...

Hydropower has a long tradition in Europe, contributing significantly during the first half of the last century to the welfare and industrial development of most countries across the continent. Today, reaching nearly 650 TWh of annual generation in an aver ...

Modern digital connectivity has necessitated the creation of robust methods for securely storing and transferring data. At the heart of all security infrastructure is the random number generator (RNG). While random numbers find use in a variety of applicat ...

Today's continued increase in demand for processing power, despite the slowdown of Moore's law, has led to an increase in processor count, which has resulted in energy consumption and distribution problems. To address this, there is a growing trend toward ...

We introduce a high-order spline geometric approach for the initial boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations. The method is geometric in the sense that it discretizes in structure preserving fashion the two de Rham sequences of differential forms inv ...

A preclinical study reports a platform for the generation of dendritic cell-derived nanovesicles with enhanced immunostimulatory function, which demonstrate promising antitumoural activity in mouse models and might overcome some of the shortcomings of earl ...

Neuroscience and neurotechnology are currently being revolutionized by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. AI is widely used to study and interpret neural signals (analytical applications), assist people with disabilities (prosthetic applica ...
