We propose a cross-nested logit (CNL) approach to investigate how individuals adjust their migration decisions in response to changes in the global landscape. In contrast to the widely used logit model, the CNL enables more intricate substitution patterns ...

The"Breathing Lung-on-a-Chip,"a novel microfluidic device featuring a stretchable membrane, replicates the natural expansion and contraction of the human lung. It provides a more realistic in-vitro platform to study respiratory diseases, particle depositio ...

This article focuses on the study of lactating sows, where the main interest is the influence of temperature, measured throughout the day, on the lower quantiles of the daily feed intake. We outline a model framework and estimation methodology for quantile ...

A field experiment – the Snow Horizontal Array Turbulence Study (SnoHATS) – has been performed over an extensive glacier in Switzerland in order to study small-scale turbulence in the stable atmospheric surface layer, and to investigate the role, dynamics ...

We propose a model order reduction technique to accurately approximate the behavior of multi-component systems without any a-priori knowledge of the coupled model. In the offline phase, we construct independent surrogate models by solving the local problem ...

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow is performed over a homogeneous surface with different heat flux forcings. The goal is to test the performance of dynamic subgrid-scale models in a numerical framework and to compare the ...

A scale-dependent dynamic subgrid model based on Lagrangian time averaging is proposed and tested in large eddy simulations sLESd of high-Reynolds number boundary layer flows over homogeneous and heterogeneous rough surfaces. The model is based on the Lagr ...

We investigate experimentally and theoretically diffusiophoretic separation of negatively charged particles in a rectangular channel flow, driven by CO2 dissolution from one side-wall. Since the negatively charged particles create an exclusion zone near th ...

Flows of gases and liquids interacting with solid objects are often turbulent within a thin boundary layer. As energy dissipation and momentum transfer are dominated by the boundary layer dynamics, many engineering applications can benefit from an improved ...

Adaptive numerical method algorithms are presented for the numerical simulation of the hysteretic behaviour of nonlinear viscous and bilinear oil dampers within a finite element program for nonlinear dynamic analysis of frame structures under earthquake ex ...

A disk that is free to rotate about its axis and connected to a torsional spring behaves as a damped oscillator when twisted and released. The initial elastic energy is periodically turned to kinetic energy and it gets progressively dissipated by the visco ...

We present an intercomparison of three subgrid-scale (SGS) models for large-eddy simulation (LES) of katabatic flows. The SGS closures we study include the Smagorinsky formulation, a scale-invariant dynamic model, and a scale-dependent dynamic model. Downs ...

Large eddy simulations of the turbulent natural convection flow in a differentially heated cavity have been carried out at a Rayleigh number of 10(9) using the spectral element method. To obtain the large eddy simulation equations, a low pass filter given ...

Global linear and nonlinear bifurcation analysis is used to revisit the spiral vortex breakdown of nominally axisymmetric swirling jets. For the parameters considered herein, stability analyses single out two unstable linear modes of azimuthal wavenumber m ...

This paper introduces and studies a class of optimal control problems based on the Clebsch approach to Euler-Poincare dynamics. This approach unifies and generalizes a wide range of examples appearing in the literature: the symmetric formulation of N-dimen ...
