Decentralized training of deep learning models is a key element for enabling data privacy and on-device learning over networks. In realistic learning scenarios, the presence of heterogeneity across different clients' local datasets poses an optimization ch ...

Dense image-based prediction methods have advanced tremendously in recent years. Their remarkable development has been possible due to the ample availability of real-world imagery. While these methods work well on photographs, their abilities do not genera ...

In sensed buildings, information related to occupant movement helps optimize important functionalities such as security enhancement, energy management, and caregiving. Typical sensing approaches for occupant tracking rely on mobile devices and cameras. The ...

In this account, we discuss the use of genetic algorithms in the inverse design process of homogeneous catalysts for chemical transformations. We describe the main components of evolutionary experiments, specifically the nature of the fitness function to o ...

Ecological surveys increasingly rely on large‐scale image datasets, typically terabytes of imagery for a single survey. The ability to collect this volume of data allows surveys of unprecedented scale, at the cost of expansive volumes of photo‐interpretati ...

We propose a deep neural network based image-to-image translation for domain adaptation, which aims at finding translations between image domains. Despite recent GAN based methods showing promising results in image-to-image translation, they are prone to f ...

Most recent test-time adaptation methods focus on only classification tasks, use specialized network architectures, destroy model calibration or rely on lightweight information from the source domain. To tackle these issues, this paper proposes a novel Tes ...

Intelligent fault diagnosis has been increasingly improved with the evolution of deep learning (DL) approaches. Recently, the emerging graph neural networks (GNNs) have also been introduced in the field of fault diagnosis with the goal to make better use o ...

This paper presents a new analytical model for estimating the free vibration of tapered friction piles. The governing differential equation for the free vibration of statically axially-loaded piles embedded in non-homogeneous soil is derived. The equation ...

The vibrational response of solid materials and structural components is substantially governed by their mechanical and geometrical properties. Low-frequency vibrations and modal frequencies are sensitive to global geometrical deviations, while high-freque ...

Neuromuscular diseases are degenerative and, thus far, incurable disorders that lead to large muscle wasting. They result in constant deterioration of activities of daily living and in particular of ambulation. Some common types include Duchenne muscular d ...

We investigate the persistence of micro-contacts between two elastic random rough surfaces by means of a simple model for quasi-static sliding. Contact clusters are calculated with the Boundary Element Method, then surfaces are repeatedly displaced to stud ...

The performance of a classifier trained on data coming from a specific domain typically degrades when applied to a related but different one. While annotating many samples from the new domain would address this issue, it is often too expensive or impractic ...

We perform a combined experimental and computational investigation of the clove hitch knot. We develop a physical model for the clove hitch by tying an elastic rod onto a rigid cylinder. In the experiments, we characterize the mechanical performance, geome ...

Spatio-temporal control of femtosecond pulse-delivery through multimode fibers (MMF) can be used to achieve two photon photo-polymerization. Transmission-matrix method is used in linear domain to solve the scrambling effect at the fiber output and generate ...

The role of deep defects and their physical origin in InGaN/GaN LED are still widely investigated and debated, in particular their impact on the electrical and optical characteristics and on the reliability of the device. In this paper we evaluate the elec ...

Knee implant loosening is mainly caused by the weakness of the prosthesis-bone interface and is the main reason for surgical revisions. However, pre-operative diagnosis is difficult due to lack of accurate tests. In this study, we developed a vibration-bas ...

Energy tunnels allow the harvesting of untapped heat at shallow depths in the underground to meet the thermal energy requirements of buildings and infrastructures over large areas. Such heat can derive from two sources: the ground surrounding energy tunnel ...

The mechanical behaviours of unsaturated soils are highly related to the water content and pore water and air distributions. Under the context of climate change, geo-disasters related to soil moisture change attract more and more research attentions. Due t ...
