Blind use patterns significantly impact visual comfort and energy efficiency in office buildings. To quantify this impact on building performance, blind control occupant behaviour models (BC-OBMs) are typically integrated into building performance simulati ...

In an era where portable electronic devices are indispensable for a wide range of activities, the need for displays that provide both long-lasting battery life and excellent visibility in different lighting conditions is increasingly important. Emissive di ...

The global construction industry contributes to 37% of carbon emissions associated to both building operations and construction. To help achieve the net-zero targets set by 2050, it is mandated to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. As we ...

Architecture is a prospective discipline. In other words, the practice of architecture traditionally explores design methods in which a particular solution is speculated upon, in order to answer a particular set of questions. These solutions tend to be org ...

Research on chipless and passive architectures for environmental sensing is generating high interest because they do not require any semiconductor components or batteries to operate, thus resulting in an eco-friendlier footprint. This study demonstrates a ...

In this article, we present 10 mu m diameter SPADs fabricated in 110 nm CIS technology based on an N (+) /HVPW junction, with enhanced sensitivity at short wavelengths. To reduce tunneling noise due to the highly-doped layers in the process, a doping compe ...

In the last few years, stroke ranked as the second most common cause of death and is the third most significant condition affecting disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. Being the most prevalent and quality of life impacting post-stroke symptom ...

Understanding the factors that influence the human perception of glare is necessary to properly address glare risks in buildings and achieve comfortable visual environments, especially in the workplace. Yet large inter-individual variabilities in glare per ...

While the influence of a glare source's spectrum on sensitivity to discomfort glare has been demonstrated repeatedly under electric light conditions, it has not yet been studied under actual daylit conditions. To investigate the influence of spectral alter ...

Solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth for a period of one hour contains more energy than that consumed by mankind over an entire year. Some of this solar energy is already collected by photovoltaic cells to cover the electricity needs of buildi ...

Accurate and reproducible color characterization is essential for colored building integrated photovoltaic products, both for manufacturing quality control and assessing long-term color stability. However, existing characterization techniques struggle to a ...

When studying discomfort glare, researchers tend to rely on a single questionnaire item to obtain user evaluations. It is unclear whether the choice of questionnaire item affects the distribution of user responses and leads to inconsistencies between studi ...

Saliency models are image-based prediction models that estimate human visual attention. Such models, when applied to architectural spaces, could pave the way for design decisions where visual attention is taken into account. In this study, we tested the pe ...

Complex Fenestration Systems (CFSs) can significantly impact both the visual and non-visual daylight effects on the occupants as well as the energy performance of buildings. To ensure that those impacts improve the overall situation, proper control algorit ...

To understand how daylight gives shape and life to architectural spaces, whether existing or imagined, requires quantifying its dynamism and energy. Maintaining these details presents a challenge to simulation and analysis methods that flatten data into di ...

Facades are the primary interface controlling the flow of solar energy in buildings and affecting their energy balance and environmental impact. Recently, large-scale 3D printing (3DP) of translucent polymers has been explored as a technique for fabricatin ...

Skyscrapers or glass towers are an extremely common model throughout the world. In the current context of climate change and resource depletion, we need to develop new postures towards these objects, especially for existing buildings that are becoming obso ...

Recent work indicates that visual features are processed in a serially dependent manner: The decision about a stimulus feature in the present is influenced by the features of stimuli seen in the past, leading to serial dependence. It remains unclear, howev ...

As humans spend most of their time indoors, indoor air quality (IAQ) significantly impacts their health. In parallel, building ventilation consumes significant energy, contributing to climate change. However, the relationships between the building ventilat ...

This study presents a novel framework for evaluating the luminance measurement capabilities of High Dynamic Range (HDR) sensor cameras in indoor glare conditions. Results indicate that the practical usage range of the CSEM VIP camera is significantly lower ...
