A variety of physical inputs acts onto bacteria in nature. However, these are most often ignored in the studies of their physiology. There is now increasing evidence indicating that bacteria respond to physical stimuli, including mechanical forces. Yet, qu ...

Microfluidic is an ensemble of technologies and methods that permits the handling and analysis of minute volumes of samples in short timescales. Since its introduction it revealed a remarkable potential to unveil novel biological mechanisms. The small volu ...

Neural functions operate in tightly controlled conditions that are mediated by multiple electrical and chemical phenomena. Brain disorders such as Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease perturb these conditions and cause a loss of neurons, which impai ...

C. elegans is frequently studied to address fundamental biological questions motivated by its short life cycle, small size, hermaphrodite behavior and well-annotated genome. In this work, we present novel microfluidic platforms that support long-term cultu ...

Skeletal muscle holds significant regenerative potential but is incapable of restoring tissue loss caused by severe injury, congenital defects or tumour ablation. Consequently, skeletal muscle models are being developed to study human pathophysiology and r ...

Tissue and organ biology are very challenging to study in mammals, and progress can be hindered, particularly in humans, by sample accessibility and ethical concerns. However, advances in stem cell culture have made it possible to derive in vitro 3D tissue ...

The application of stem cells in drug screening and regenerative therapy has led to important advances in basic biology and biomedicine. Such strategies require high cell numbers and the efficient maturation into faithful functional organ or tissue units. ...

The fabrication of microfluidic devices is often still a time-consuming and costly process. Here we introduce a very simple and cheap microfabrication process based on "razor writing", also termed xurography, for the ultra-rapid prototyping of microfluidic ...

The in vitro recapitulation of tissue and organ function represents one of the main objectives of tissue engineering. Developments in this field have numerous applications, from alleviating the shortage of donor organs to providingmore representative pla ...

Two-phase liquid cooling of computer chips via microchannels etched directly on silicon dies is a potential long-term solution to enable continued integration of high-performance multiprocessors. Two-phase cooling refers to the heat removal via evaporation ...

We engineered an acellular biomimetic microenvironment to regulate stem cell fate and applied it to maintain mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell self-renewal. In the 3D environment formed using hydrogel scaffolds in which specific integrin ligation was provided ...

Generating stable, high-producing mammalian cell lines is a major bottleneck in the manufacture of recombinant therapeutic proteins. Conventional gene transfer methods for cell line generation rely on random plasmid integration, resulting in unpredictable ...

The manipulation of living biological cells in microfluidic channels by a combination of negative dielectrophoretic barriers and pressure-driven flows is widely employed in lab-on-a-chip systems. However, electric fields in conducting media induce Joule he ...
