Efficient numerical simulations of coupled multi-component systems can be particularly challenging. This is mostly due to the complexity of their solutions, as mutual interactions may cause emergent behaviors, including synchronization and instabilities. V ...

Recently, there has been increasing attention toward inhaled nanoparticles (NPs) to develop inhalation therapies for diseases associated with the pulmonary system and investigate the toxic effects of hazardous environmental particles on human lung health. ...

Physical simulation is an indispensable component of robotics simulation platforms that serves as the basis for a plethora of research directions. Looking strictly at robotics, the common characteristic of the most popular physics engines, such as ODE, DAR ...

The NANOGrav, Parkes, European, and International Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) Collaborations have reported evidence for a common-spectrum process that can potentially correspond to a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) in the 1-100 nHz frequency ...

This paper presents image velocimetry measurements on turbulent flows adjacent to a permeable bed made of randomly packed glass particles. For measuring flow velocities inside the bed, the refractive index of the glass particles was matched with that of th ...

Wind energy, together with other renewable energy sources, are expected to grow substantially in the coming decades and play a key role in mitigating climate change and achieving energy sustainability. One of the main challenges in optimizing the design, o ...

In the present paper, a multi-step reconstruction procedure is proposed for high order finite volume schemes on unstructured grids using compact stencil. The procedure is a recursive algorithm that can eventually provide sufficient relations for high order ...

We introduce the Reduced Immersed Method (RIM) for the real-time simulation of two-way coupled incompressible fluids and elastic solids and the interaction of multiple deformables with (self-)collisions. Our framework is based on a novel discretization of ...

We introduce a two-level preconditioner for the efficient solution of large scale saddle point linear systems arising from the finite element (FE) discretization of parametrized Stokes equations. This preconditioner extends the Multi Space Reduced Basis (M ...

If dark matter interacts, even weakly, via non-gravitational forces, simulations predict that it will be preferentially scattered towards the trailing edge of the halo during collisions between galaxy clusters. This will temporarily create a non-symmetric ...

We present a new technique for the design and test of coaxial switched oscillators (SWOs). In this paper (Part I of a two-part paper), we concentrate on the electrostatic design of coaxial SWOs. We introduce a new design for the electrodes, which have been ...

The accurate prediction of transmural stresses in arterial walls requires on the one hand robust and efficient numerical schemes for the solution of boundary value problems including fluid-structure interactions and on the other hand the use of a material ...

The current experimental activity aimed at resolving the scaling of stream-wise turbulence intensity profiles (uu) over bar (+)(y(+)) with Reynolds number in turbulent flat plate boundary layers has brought the largely unresolved issue of correcting system ...

Previous studies of hyporheic zone focused largely on the net mass transfer of solutes between stream and streambed. Solute transport within the bed has attracted less attention. In this study, we combined flume experiments and numerical simulations to exa ...

A novel technique to realize true time reversal of an optical signal, using dynamic Brillouin gratings in high-birefringence fibers, is proposed. A data sequence of optical pulses with 2-ns duration was efficiently time-reversed. A numerical simulation of ...

This paper presents a method for the analysis of planar multilayered waveguide-fed antennas. The method combines mixed-potential integral equations (for laterally open regions) and modal field integral equations (for laterally closed regions) with a seamle ...
