This paper considers two pertinent research inquiries: 'Can an AI-based predictive framework be utilised for the optimisation of solar energy management?' and 'What are the ways in which the AI-based predictive framework can be integrated within the Smart ...

In light of the energy transition, it becomes a widespread solution to decentralize and to decarbonize energy systems. However, limited transformer capacities are a hurdle for large-scale integration of solar energy in the electricity grid. The aim of this ...

The increasing penetration of stochastic renewable distributed generation, energy storage systems and novel loads (e.g. electric-vehicles (EVs)) in active-distribution-networks (ADNs) or microgrids has triggered the need to develop real-time (e.g. minutes ...

Human society is craving new and renewable energy sources. Indeed, the need for novel sources is an obligation in order to cope with the exponentially increasing global energy demand. Also, environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels are more cru ...

Wind energy, together with other renewable energy sources, are expected to grow substantially in the coming decades and play a key role in mitigating climate change and achieving energy sustainability. One of the main challenges in optimizing the design, o ...

In this work, we propose a supervisory control structure in islanded DC microgrids such that a well scheduled and balanced utilization of various resources is achieved. Our supervisory control layer rests on top of a voltage-controlled primary layer and co ...

The global problem of energy supply and the reduction of the carbon footprint can only be solved by a massive replacement of fossil fuels or atomic energy by renewable resources. As the latter are mostly weather-dependent, they are uncontrollable and unpre ...

Energy storage is generally considered as a means to bridge a period between when/where energy is available and when/where it is in demand. Storage plays an important role by providing flexibility to energy systems, increasing the potential to accommodate ...

This study aims to investigate the role of distributed generation through the energy hub concept and refurbishment of existing buildings. More specifically, a computational platform combining (i) the urban energy modelling tool CitySimPro and (ii) the micr ...

Limited fossil energy resources and the potential danger of nuclear power plants led to growing popularity of solar energy. In Switzerland, Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) is expected to be responsible for up to quarter of the energy production fro ...

Efficiently and inexpensively converting solar energy into chemical fuels is an important goal towards a sustainable energy economy. An integrated tandem cell approach could reasonably convert over 20% of the sun's energy directly into chemical fuels like ...

Since the early 80s, numerous developed and also developing countries on all continents have embarked on reforms of their national electricity sectors with varying degrees of ambition. The reforms were associated with hopes for accelerated innovation, enha ...
