Topological polar structures, in analogy to spin vortices and skyrmions, have received tremendous attention for their fascinating prospects in future device applications. However, in the widely studied ferroelectric-based superlattices, the epitaxial heter ...

Application of protective polymer coatings to enhance the biostability of DNA-based nanomaterials (DONs) has become common practice in in vitro and in vivo experiments. While the functional effect of these coatings is obvious, a detailed molecular picture ...

In laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), complex components are manufactured layer-by-layer via scanning the cross-sections of a 3D CAD model using a high intensity laser. Throughout this process, the material is exposed to temperature profiles that significantl ...

We address the effect of elastic inhomogeneity on elastic modulus and hardness determinations made by depth-sensing indentations performed on individual particles embedded within a matrix of different elastic modulus. Finite element simulations and nanoind ...

A process is presented for the production of periodic cellular structures based on investment casting of Al-12 wt%Si alloy within a mould that is made of table salt (NaCl) packed around a sacrificial PLA polymer template. Moulding begins by pouring salt gr ...

Cutting edge electron microscopes allow to probe the optical excitations in nanostructures with subangstrom spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. In this study we discuss the prospects of probing the ultrafast out-of-equilibrium dynamics of plasmoni ...

Since the discovery of charge disproportionation in the FeO2 square-lattice compound Sr3Fe2O7 by Mossbauer spectroscopy more than fifty years ago, the spatial ordering pattern of the disproportionated charges has remained "hidden" to conventional diffracti ...

Silicon nanowire-based sensors find many applications in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems, thanks to their unique characteristics of flexibility and strength that emerge at the nanoscale. This work is the first study of this class of micro- and na ...

Variant selection during the A1→L10 transformation in a polycrystalline red gold alloy close to equiatomic Au-Cu composition has been extensively studied by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) in our previous work. The use of a mathematical description ...

Catalytic dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of amines and alcohols are important in the synthesis of fine chemicals. Despite several efficient homogeneous catalysts having been identified, highly active heterogeneous catalysts remain elusive, although they ...

We report the possibility to simultaneously perform wide-field nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond magnetic microscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements at high pressure. NV color centers are created on the culet of a diamond anvil which is integrat ...

Know-how of volume change characteristics, VCC, of the fine-grained soils, exposed to thermal stresses, is essential for design of various thermo-active structures. These stresses are known to induce excess pore-water pressure, Δu θ , in the saturated stat ...

The mechanical model of the critical shear crack theory (CSCT) has been used in the past to investigate a number of shear-related problems, such as punching of slab–column connections with and without transverse reinforcement. In this paper, a discussion o ...

The mechanical properties of Fe-Mn-Al-C steel are significantly enhanced after κ-carbide precipitation via aging; however, most aging treatments are energy demanding because they require relatively high temperatures and extended holding times. This researc ...

A method for manufacturing an object including the steps of forming layers by adding successive layers of material to form the object by selective laser melting (SLM), and inducing plastic deformation and residual stress into solidified material of at leas ...

We implement the C-shaped sample test method and micro-cantilever beam testing to measure the local strength of microscopic, low-aspect-ratio ceramic particles, namely high purity vapor grown a-alumina Sumicorundum (R) particles 15-30 mu m in diameter, kno ...

The competition between dislocation emission and cleavage at a crack tip plays an important role in governing the intrinsic fracture behavior of crystalline materials. This competition is not well understood in magnesium, which has many different combinati ...
