This study presents the development and experimental validation of an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) based on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) for the treatment of urinary incontinence. Traditional AUS devices are often mechanically complex, prone ...

Imaging systems using closed bipolar electrode (cBPE) arrays and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) have attracted great attention in recent years as a 2D imaging platform with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, the fabrication techniques for cBPE arrays ...

We observe fiber fuse in tapered GeAsSe photonic crystal fibers (PCF) at around 7 MW∕cm2 of intra-core intensity. Vertically cleaved facets from the un-tapered regions and the tapered regions were imaged. The images show shallow voids of different shapes c ...

A numerical investigation was carried out in order to simulate experimental results previously obtained concerning two-dimensional (2D) in-plane crack propagation in laminated glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates. The laminated plates were designed ...

We recently described a method for confocal reflection imaging through fibers, as a way to increase contrast when imaging unstained biological specimens. Using a transmission matrix, focused spots can be created at the distal end of a fiber. The backscatte ...

With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads on roads, in particular bridge deck slabs are more severely solicitated by fatigue loading. To avoid heavy interventions for strengthening of deck slabs, an improved building material is used, name ...

Herein, we present a simple microelectrode preparation methodology consisting in coating a platinum wire or a carbon fiber with a thin insulating Parylene C film (e.g. 1–10 μm), to produce SECM probes with a small and constant probe RG (i.e. ratio between ...

Silicon nitride based ceramics (SiAlONs); tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia (3Y‐TZP); alumina and their composites reinforced with different amount of multi‐ walled carbon‐nanotubes (CNTs) have been processed by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). High tempera ...

The ultimate strength of reinforced concrete slabs is frequently governed by the punching shear capacity, which may be increased with addition of traditional fitments such as reinforcing steel, headed studs or shear heads. In addition to these traditional ...

The multifunctional use of FRP composites offers the potential to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of lightweight engineering structures for an innovative infrastructure that meets the challenges with which today's construction industry is f ...

A probabilistic method for the strength prediction of adhesively bonded double lap joints composed of pultruded GFRP adherends subjected to quasi-static axial tensile loading is presented. The prediction method is based on the experimentally determined mat ...
