We enable the estimation of the per-axon axial diffusivity from single encoding, strongly diffusion-weighted, pulsed gradient spin echo data. Additionally, we improve the estimation of the per-axon radial diffusivity compared to estimates based on spherica ...

Community structure in graph-modeled data appears in a range of disciplines that comprise network science. Its importance relies on the influence it bears on other properties of graphs such as resilience, or prediction of missing connections. Nevertheless, ...

This work focuses on obtaining a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal representation that accounts for a longitudinal T-1 and transverse T-2* relaxations while at the same time integrating directional diffusion in the context of scattered multi-parametr ...

Noninvasive estimation of axon diameter with diffusion MRI holds the potential to investigate the dynamic properties of the brain network and pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies use powder averaging to account for complex white matter a ...

Highly energy-efficient wireless sensor nodes are a prerequisite for a sustainable operation of the Internet of things. Therefore, classical approaches for system design based on digital signal processing are not a viable solution, but system design has to ...

Diffusion MRI (DW-MRI) allows for the detailed exploration of the brain white matter microstructure, with applications in both research and the clinic. However, state-of-the-art methods for microstructure estimation suffer from known limitations, such as t ...

This thesis focuses on the signal modelling of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DW-MRI) in the brain's white matter (WM). DW-MRI a non-invasive technique with enormous potential for the study of the brain's microstructure by measuring the dif ...

In the central nervous system of primates, several pathways are characterized by different spectra of axon diameters. In vivo methods, based on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, can provide axon diameter index estimates non-invasively. However ...

Late human development is characterized by the maturation of high-level functional processes, which rely on reshaping of white matter connections, as well as synaptic density. However, the relationship between the whole-brain dynamics and the underlying wh ...

Compressed Sensing teaches us that measurements can be traded for offline computation if the signal being sensed has a simple enough representation. Proper decoders can exactly recover the high-dimensional signal of interest from a lower-dimensional vector ...

Stroke patients vary considerably in terms of outcomes: some patients present ‘natural’ recovery proportional to their initial impairment (fitters), while others do not (non-fitters). Thus, a key challenge in stroke rehabilitation is to identify individual ...

With the expanding role of converter-interfaced distributed energy resources, modern power grids are evolving towards low-inertia networks that are increasingly vulnerable to extreme dynamics. Consequently, advanced signal processing techniques are needed ...

Sampling has always been at the heart of signal processing providing a bridge between the analogue world and discrete representations of it, as our ability to process data in continuous space is quite limited. Furthermore, sampling plays a key part in unde ...

The modeling of the diffusion MRI signal from moving and deforming organs such as the heart is challenging due to significant motion and deformation of the imaged medium during the signal acquisition. Recently, a mathematical formulation of the Bloch-Torre ...

Originally discovered in condensed matter systems, topological insulators (TIs) have been ubiquitously extended to various fields of classical wave physics including photonics, phononics, acoustics, mechanics, and microwaves. In the bulk, like any other in ...

Purpose Reliable detection and fitting of macromolecules (MM) are crucial for accurate quantification of brain short-echo time (TE) 1H-MR spectra. An experimentally acquired single MM spectrum is commonly used. Higher spectral resolution at ultra-high fiel ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition characterized by loss of function, secondary to damaged spinal neurons, disrupted axonal connections, and myelin loss. Spontaneous recovery is limited, and there are no approved pharmaceutical treatments ...

The distribution of axon diameters (ADD) is an important white matter feature: it influences action potential speed, it has been shown to evolve during development, and also to be affected during pathological processes. Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging ...

This database is meant to evaluate the performance of denoising and delineation algorithms for PPG signals affected by noise. The noise generator allows applying the algorithms under test to an artificially corrupted reference PPG signal and comparing its ...

Non-invasive virtual histology of white matter tissues is the ultimate promise of diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI). This hope is fueled by the exquisite sensitivity of DW-MRI to micrometer-scale displacement of diffusing water molecules, averaged over a who ...
