The aim of rationally designed composites called metamaterials or metasurfaces is to achieve effective properties that go beyond those of their constituent parts. For periodic architectures, the design can draw on concepts from solid-state physics, such as ...

Psychotic symptoms are among the most debilitating and challenging presentations of severe psychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorder. A pathophysiological understanding of intrinsic brain activity underlying psychos ...

Photonics integrated circuits are a promising solution for the growing demands of data transmission and future system-on-chip technologies. Within this context, nonlinear optical interactions offer unique opportunities for all-optical processing, sampling, ...

In a recent discovery (Wen et al 2022 Phys. Rev. Lett. 129 045001), streaming waves were found in multipactor-induced plasma discharges. However, due to the limitations of a 1D simulation setup, these waves displayed only transverse dynamics. In this lette ...

Nature is abundant in material platforms with anisotropic permittivities arising from symmetry reduction that feature a variety of extraordinary optical effects. Principal optical axes are essential characteristics for these effects that define light-matte ...

We introduce a Lamb-wave medium with tunable propagation velocities, which are controlled by a two-dimensional heating pattern produced by a laser beam. We utilized it to demonstrate that waves in an appropriately designed medium can propagate in the form ...

The temporal variability of the thalamus in functional networks may provide valuable insights into the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. To address the complexity of the role of the thalamic nuclei in psychosis, we introduced micro-co-activation patterns ( ...

Objectives: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe, chronic, affective disorder characterized by recurrent switching between mood states, psychomotor and cognitive symptoms, which can linger in euthymic states as residual symptoms. Hippocampal alterations may p ...

Previously, space-time wave packets (STWPs) have been gen-erated in free space with reduced diffraction and a tunable group velocity by combining multiple frequency comb lines each carrying a single Bessel mode with a unique wave num-ber. It might be poten ...

In this thesis, we unveil a third design path to manipulate elastic waves within architected media, distinct from the traditional phononic crystal and locally-resonant metamaterial concepts. The core innovation lies in the concept of nonlocal resonances, d ...

The design of wavefront-shaping devices is conventionally approached using real-frequency modeling. However, since these devices interact with light through radiative channels, they are by default non-Hermitian objects having complex eigenvalues (poles and ...

Raw data associated to the manuscript ‘’Spin wave dispersion of ultra-low damping hematite (α-Fe2O3) at GHz frequencies‘’, Physical Review Materials 7, 054407(2023); doi: 10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.7.054407 Information about file fo ...

Low magnetic damping and high group velocity of spin waves (SWs) or magnons are two crucial parameters for functional magnonic devices. Magnonics research on signal processing and wave-based computation at GHz frequencies focused on the artificial ferrimag ...

Photonic integrated circuits have the potential to pervade into multiple applications traditionally limited to bulk optics. Of particular interest for new applications are ferroelectrics such as Lithium Niobate, which exhibit a large Pockels effect, but ar ...

Full wavefront control by photonic components requires that the spatial phase modulation on an incoming optical beam ranges from 0 to 2 pi. Because of their radiative coupling to the environment, all optical components are intrinsically non-Hermitian syste ...

Optical resonators enable the generation, manipulation, and storage of electromagnetic waves. The physics underlying their operation is determined by the interference of electromagnetic waves, giving rise to the resonance spectrum. This mechanism causes th ...

We introduce a reconfigurable medium for the manipulation of elastic propagation properties of Lamb waves. It is based on a shape memory polymer (SMP) with temperature-dependent Young's modulus. Waves are excited by a laser pulse and detected by a laser vi ...

In this work, we propose a numerical approach based on forward coupled mode modeling to simultaneously evaluate second- and third-order nonlinearities inside a dispersion-engineered waveguide towards the goal of generating broadband terahertz (THz) radiati ...

Despite diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) evidence for widespread fractional anisotropy (FA) reductions in the brain white matter of patients with bipolar disorder, questions remain regarding the specificity and sensitivity of FA abnormalities as opposed to o ...

A Phase-contrast imaging (PCI) diagnostic provides measurements of line-integrated electron density fluctuations. Localisation along the laser beam path can be achieved with a spatial filter that selects the wave-vector directions of the fluctuations contr ...
