Here, we introduce a design, fabrication, and control methodology for large amplitude torsional microactuators powered by ultrasound. The microactuators are 3D printed from two polymers with drastically different elastic moduli as a monolithic compliant me ...

The balancing of mechanisms consists in distributing their moving masses, inertias, and elastic components in order to achieve key mechanical properties, such as the elimination of the shaking forces and moments exported onto their supporting structure or ...

Accurate predictions of how vortices grow, evolve, and separate from aerodynamic objects are desirable for various applications ranging from autonomous aerial vehicles to wind turbines. Here, we present an experimental characterisation of the formation pro ...

Thanks to their absence of play, absence of contact friction and possible monolithic fabrication, flexure pivots offer advantages over traditional bearings in small-scale, high accuracy applications and environments where lubrication and wear debris are pr ...

We propose a new control approach for the twisted string actuation (TSA) system; a hybrid control scheme consisting of two nested loops, considering the motor angle and the axial force at the clamping point of the actuator as the system outputs. We show th ...

Robotics teleoperation enables human operators to control the movements of distally located robots. The development of new wearable interfaces as alternatives to hand-held controllers has created new modalities of control, which are more intuitive to use. ...

Haptic guidance has been shown to improve performance in many fields as it can give additional information without overloading other sensory channels such as vision or audition. Our group is investigating new intuitive ways to interact with robots, and we ...

In the field of marine robotics, the problem of range based underwater target localization can be defined as that of localizing an unknown - fixed or moving - target from a surface vehicle called the tracker, using range information available about the tar ...

The problem of autonomously mapping highly cluttered environments, such as urban and natural canyons, is intractable with the current UAV technology. The reason lies in the absence or unreliability of GNSS signals due to partial sky occlusion or multi-path ...

Nowadays inertial sensors are extensively used for gait analysis. They can be used to perform temporal event detection (i.e. step detection) and to estimate the orientation of the feet and other body segments to determine walking speed and distance. Usuall ...

We present an algorithm to estimate the rotational motion of an event camera. In contrast to traditional cameras, which produce images at a fixed rate, event cameras have independent pixels that respond asynchronously to brightness changes, with microsecon ...

To obtain valid 3D joint angles with inertial sensors careful sensor-to-segment calibration (i.e. functional or anatomical calibration) is required and measured angular velocity at each sensor needs to be integrated to obtain segment and joint orientation ...

We investigated how the visual system selects a reference frame for the perception of motion. Two concentric arcs underwent circular motion around the center of the display, where observers fixated. The outer (target) arc's angular velocity profile was mod ...

Magnetic manipulation of objects within the body is a growing field of research since the second half of the last century. Therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities offered by such technology are extended with the clinical need to make procedures less invasi ...

We present a high-speed CMOS integrated magnetic angle sensor consisting of two 8-contact circular vertical Hall devices (CVHD). The biasing and sensing of the Hall voltage is rotated clockwise for the first device, and counter clockwise for the second one ...

In Contreras-Vidal and colleagues have shown the feasibility of inferring the linear and angular kinematics of treadmill walking from scalp EEG. Here, we apply a discrete approach to the same problem of decoding the human gait. By reducing the gait process ...

Granular materials are large sets of macroscopic particles that interact solely via contact forces. The static behavior depends on the contact network and on the surface friction forces between grains; when they are set in motion (typically by vibrations) ...

We have analyzed data from a multi-site campaign to observe oscillations in the F5 star Procyon. The data consist of high-precision velocities that we obtained over more than three weeks with 11 telescopes. A new method for adjusting the data weights allow ...

Indoor pedestrian navigation is probably a very challenging research area. In this context, an optimal data fusion filter that hybridises a large set of observations: angles of arrival (AOA), time differences of arrival (TDOA), accelerations, angular veloc ...
