The invention of 3D atomic force microscopy (3D-AFM) has enabled visualizing subnanoscale 3D hydration structures. Meanwhile, its applications to imaging flexible molecular chains have started to be experimentally explored. However, the validity and princi ...

Single-layer graphene, hosting a high density of functionalized molecular-sieving atom-thick pores, is considered to be an excellent material for gas separation membranes. These functionalized atom-thick pores enable the shortest transport pathway across t ...

The unique mechanical and electrical properties of graphene make it an exciting material for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). NEMS resonators with graphene springs facilitate studies of graphene's fundamental material characteristics and thus enable i ...

Single-layer graphene (SLG) membranes, hosting molecular-sieving nanopores have been regarded as the ultimate gas separation membranes, attributing to the fact that they are the thinnest possible molecular barrier. However, the expected attractive performa ...

High-permeance, molecular-sieving, nanoporous single-layer graphene (NSLG) membranes are highly promising for gas separation. However, the formation of cracks during the transfer of NSLG to a low-cost porous support is difficult to avoid. These cracks are ...

Surfactants offer a tunable approach for modulating the exposed surface area of a nanoparticle. They further present a scalable and cost-effective means for suspending single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which have demonstrated practical use as fluore ...

Auger-ionized free-carriers in a one-dimensional semiconductor are predicted to result in a strong band-gap renormalization. Isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) under high-intensity laser irradiation exhibit strong nonlinear photoluminescence ( ...

A strategy for a simple dispersion of commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using two organosilicones, polycarbosilane SMP10 and polysilazane Ceraset PSZ20, in organic solvents such as cyclohexane, tetrahydrofuran (THF), m-xylene and chloroform ...

Three-point bending tests were performed on double-anchored, < 110 > silicon nanowire samples in the vacuum chamber of a scanning electron microscope ( SEM) via a micromanipulator equipped with a piezoresistive force sensor. Nanowires with widths of 35nm a ...

As the scaling of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology is reaching fundamental limitations, novel device concepts and materials have started to be investigated to overcome the scaling challenges for integrated circuits. Graphene has be ...

SERS studies were performed on films of two families of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) under an excitation light of 514.5 nm and 647.1 nm. These included Aldrich-MWCNTs, which alternate semiconducting and metallic tubes and M-MWCNTs that contain only ...

The ability of Pt nanostructures to induce the splitting of the I-I bond in iodine (triiodide) molecules is explored here to enhance electron transfer in the iodine/iodide redox couple. Following the dispersal of Pt nanoparticles at 2% (weight) level, char ...

Nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches have the potential to complement or replace traditional CMOS transistors in the area of ultra-low-power digital electronics. This paper reports the demonstration of prototype circuits including the first 3-stage ring os ...

This paper reports the successful experimental demonstration of the localized growth of horizontal, dense carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays in situ and at the wafer scale. The selectivity and directionality of the CNT catalytic growth process along with the ade ...

Functional nanostructured carbon materials, including two-dimensionally extended nanosheets, offer intriguing perspectives for applications in emerging technologies such as hydrogen storage, lithium storage, transition metal free catalysis, or solar abso ...

Dense array of horizontal carbon nanotubes (CNTs) connected to electrodes is a basic building block for devices in a wide field of applications such as interconnect lines or micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) for sensing for instance. For interconnects ...

As complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) scaling meets fundamental limitations, revolutionary device concepts and materials are urgently needed as alternatives or supplements to CMOS technology. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), featuring extraordinary phy ...

Despite an evermore complete plethora of complex domain-specific semiempirical models, no succinct recipe for large-scale carbon nanotube electromechanical systems design has been formulated. To combine the benefits of these highly sensitive miniaturized m ...

Toughness in Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) is achieved if crack deflection can occur at the fiber/matrix interface, preventing crack penetration into the fiber and enabling energy-dissipating fiber pullout. To investigate toughening in nanoscale CMCs, d ...

We demonstrate plasmon-mechanical coupling in a metalized nanomechanical oscillator. A coupled surface plasmon is excited in the 25 nm wide gap between two metalized silicon nitride beams. The strong plasmonic dispersion allows the nanomechanical beams the ...
