Background Each year, five million people are left disabled after stroke. Upper -extremity (UE) dysfunction is a leading problem. Neuroplasticity can be enhanced by non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) but evidence from large, randomized multicenter trial ...

Experiments on the lower limbs are the only approaches being used to study how hypogravity (HG) (0 < g < 1, e.g., Moon: 1/6 g, Mars: 3/8 g) affects human movement. The goal of this study was to expand this field experimentally by investigating the effect o ...

"Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages" is the third sustainable development goal for the United Nations Agenda of 2030. This doctoral thesis fully embodied this objective by targeting stroke, a leading cause of death and disabili ...

We propose a novel machine learning (ML)-driven methodology to estimate biomechanical variables of interest traditionally obtained from upper-extremity musculoskeletal (MSK) modeling. MSK models facilitate personalized modeling, perform "what-if" analyses, ...

In the context of extra-terrestrial missions, the effects of hypogravity (0 < G < 1) on the human body can reduce the well-being of the crew, cause musculoskeletal problems and affect their ability to perform tasks, especially during long-term missions. To ...

Objectives (i) to create a shortened version of the Action Research Arm Test scale, (ii) to investigate its psychometric properties compared to the original scale and (iii) to externally validate it within an independent cohort. Design Prospective longitud ...

Context Long-term adherence to physical activity (PA) interventions is challenging. The Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise programmes were adapted Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise (aLiFE) to include more challenging activities and a behaviour ...

Although hallucinations are important and frequent symptoms in major psychiatric and neurological diseases, little is known about their brain mechanisms. Hallucinations are unpredictable and private experiences, making their investigation, quantification a ...

Foot devices have been ubiquitously used in surgery to control surgical equipment. Most common applications are foot switches for electro-surgery, endoscope positioning and tele-robotic consoles. Switches fall short of providing continuous control as requi ...

Objective: To investigate (i) typical protocols used in research on biomechanical response to running-induced fatigue, (ii) the effect of sport-induced acute fatigue on the biomechanics of running and functional tests, and (iii) the consistency of analyzed ...

Limb amputation is characterized by complex and intermingled brain reorganization processes combining sensorimotor deprivation induced by the loss of the limb per se, and compensatory behaviors, such as the over-use of the intact or remaining limb. While a ...

This article presents a novel torque measuring setup working in the nano newton-meter range. The central novelty is a long (1 meter range) thin (diameter of a few tens of micrometers) metallic wire used instead of the relatively stiff torsion zone of the s ...

Deciphering how quadrupeds coordinate their legs and other body parts, such as the trunk, head, and tail (i.e., body-limb coordination), can provide informative insights to improve legged robot mobility. In this study, we focused on sprawling locomotion of ...

A flow directed device adapted to be guided by a fuid, such as blood, flow within a tubular structure such as a blood vessel is disclosed, said device comprising a proximal end (100), a distal end (101) and an elongated body (102) in between defining a lon ...

The HoxD cluster is critical for vertebrate limb development. Enhancers located in both the telomeric and centromeric gene deserts flanking the cluster regulate the transcription of HoxD genes. In rare patients, duplications, balanced translocations or inv ...

Our brain constantly receives and integrates a flow of sensory and motor information that shapes the way our body is represented. Several experimental approaches have been proposed to alter the body representation, by manipulating exteroceptive or interoce ...

The invention provides for a steerable guidewire for insertion into a body cavity, characterized in that it comprises an elongated body (101) defining a longitudinally-arranged lumen (200) comprising i) a proximal end portion (100) and ii) a distal end por ...

In the classic model of vision, processing is local, feedforward and hierarchical. The first stages of the visual system are retinotopic, i.e., neighboring points in the outside world are mapped onto neighboring photoreceptors of the retina and this is pre ...

A milestone in vertebrate evolution, the transition from water to land, owes its success to the development of a sprawling body plan that enabled an amphibious lifestyle. The body, originally adapted for swimming, evolved to benefit from limbs that enhance ...

Hox genes encode transcription factors (TFs) that establish morphological diversity in the developing embryo. The similar DNA-binding motifs of the various HOX TFs contrast with the wide-range of HOX-dependent genetic programs. The influence of the chromat ...
