Since the dawn of humanity, human beings seeked to light their surroundings for their well-being, security and development. The efficiency of ancient lighting devices, e.g. oil lamps or candles, was in the order of 0.03-0.04% and jumped to 0.4-0.6% with th ...

Strain is an inevitable phenomenon in two-dimensional (2D) material, regardless of whether the film is suspended or supported. Moreover, strain is known to alter the physical and chemical properties, such as the band gap, charge carrier effective masses, d ...

Carbon nano-onions are a class of nanomaterials that can exhibit long electron spin relaxation times at room temperature and thus hold promise as potential building blocks for spintronics and quantum information processing devices. Despite first being synt ...

Mycobacteria have unique cell envelopes, surface properties and growth dynamics, which all play a part in the ability of these important pathogens to infect, evade host immunity, disseminate and to resist antibiotic challenges. Recent atomic force microsco ...

Long acquisition times preclude the application of multiecho spin echo (MESE) sequences for myelin water fraction (MWF) mapping in daily clinical practice. In search of alternative methods, previous studies of interest explored the biophysical modeling of ...

High-resolution live-cell imaging is necessary to study complex biological phenomena. Modern fluorescence microscopy methods are increasingly combined with complementary, label-free techniques to put the fluorescence information into the cellular context. ...

The success of high-speed atomic force microscopy in imaging molecular motors1, enzymes2 and microbes3 in liquid environments suggests that the technique could be of significant value in a variety of areas of nanotechnology. However, the majority of atomic ...

Laser based additive manufacturing allows to build a designed shape layer-by-layer, offering versatility and flexibility to many metallurgical sectors. The fast cooling rates and repeated heat cycles depending on the laser and scanning parameters are not e ...

Super-resolution microscopy of defects in a two-dimensional material unveils the transport of single proton charges at solid/water interfaces. Aqueous proton transport at interfaces is ubiquitous and crucial for a number of fields, ranging from cellular tr ...

The combination of complementary measurement techniques has become a frequent approach to improve scientific knowledge. Pairing of the high lateral resolution scanning force microscopy (SFM) with the spectroscopic information accessible through scanning tr ...

Optical beam deflection (OBD) is the most prevalent method for measuring cantilever deflections in atomic force microscopy (AFM), mainly due to its excellent noise performance. In contrast, piezoresistive strain-sensing techniques provide benefits over OBD ...

Nanoscale science is an emerging field of our time and opens a broad horizon for applications in almost every area of human activity, from medicine to energy storage. As usual, there are numerous challenges in the way of progress, which slow down the devel ...

Large scale bridging in mode-I delamination of layered composites is an important toughening mechanism. While its extent depends on constituent materials, it is also influenced by specimen geometry. Here, an analytical approach is adopted to express the th ...

We demonstrate a novel method for fabricating single crystal diamond diffraction gratings based on crystallographic etching that yields high-quality diffraction gratings from commercially available diamond plates. Both V-groove and rectangular gratin ...

In Atomic force microscopy (AFM), the tip-sample interaction force can be measured through two primary detection techniques: optical beam detection (OBD) and electrical (self-sensing) readout. Compared to the optical method, the convenience of the self-sen ...

NOVELTY - The scanning method involves generating data signal using a sensor. The first component based on a motion in a first direction of an actuator configured to provide motion between a sample and a probe in the first direction, the first direction su ...

Employing polymer cantilevers has shown to outperform using their silicon or silicon nitride analogues concerning the imaging speed of atomic force microscopy (AFM) in tapping mode (intermittent contact mode with amplitude modulation) by up to one order of ...

Mechanical properties of nanostructures could be remarkably different from their bulk counterparts owing to scale effects, which have attracted considerable research interest in recent years. However, nanomechanics studies are hindered by the difficulties ...

Topographic nanostructuring of surfaces is a promising concept, in particular to improve the bio-integration of titanium orthopedic implants. In this context, a new method for the nanostructuring of anodised titanium surfaces was developed. Ordered topogra ...

This article presents a measurement technique and data analysis tool to perform 3D grain distribution mapping and indexing of oligocrystalline samples using neutrons: Laue three-dimensional neutron diffraction (Laue3DND). The approach builds on forward mod ...
