Steel and steel-concrete composite bridges made of plate girders represent an economical structural form and are largely used for short and medium spans. Two parallel plate girders connected by cross-beams define a twin-girder bridge. This type of bridge t ...

With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads, bridges are more solicited by fatigue loading. Bridge elements like deck slabs are subjected to a high number of stress cycles at relatively small stress magnitudes. The application of Fracture Me ...

Based on current fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite construction principles, FRP decks fall into two categories: pultruded decks and sandwich decks. Sandwich decks comprise face sheets and either honeycombs or foams reinforced with internal FRP webs ...

The addition of a thin overlay of Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) to Reinforced Concrete (RC) members is an emerging technique to strengthen and protect existing structures and to design durable new structures. Combining UHPFRC wi ...

Over the past decades, an increasing number of bridges with integral abutment have been built in Switzerland. This type of bridge offers various advantages over standard bridges with abutments, equipped with expansion joints and bearings that require regul ...

Monitoring the attentive and emotional status of the driver is critical for the safety and comfort of driving. In this work a real-time non-intrusive monitoring system is developed, which detects the emotional states of the driver by analyzing facial expre ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sandwich structures offer several advantages compared to structures made of traditional materials, such as high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, low thermal conductivity and rapid component installation. In this ...

With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads on roads, in particular bridge deck slabs are more severely solicitated by fatigue loading. To avoid heavy interventions for strengthening of deck slabs, an improved building material is used, name ...

FRP bridge decks offer several advantages compared with conventional concrete bridge decks, particularly their much lower weight, but also their resistance against corrosion as well as easier installation and maintenance. The poorly conceived methods avail ...

The span limits of two glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bridge concepts involving GFRP-balsa sandwich plates are discussed. The sandwich plates were either used directly as slab bridges or as decks of a hybrid sandwich-steel girder bridges. In the lat ...

The conceptual designs by Christian Menn of four landmark bridges are presented: 1) a 350-m span cable-stayed bridge with jointless deck girder, 2) a cable-stayed bridge with a single “spindle-shaped” pylon, 3) a bridge with an arch reaching high above the ...

Design of concrete girder bridges has significantly evolved during the last decades. This has been particularly relevant with respect to shear design, motivated by changes in actions and design models. As a consequence, assessing the shear strength of exis ...

The through-thickness performance of adhesive joints connecting pultruded FRP bridge decks and steel girders subjected to loading in the transverse bridge direction was investigated. Deck-to-girder adhesive joints can be assumed as being loaded by uplift f ...

The through-thickness performance of adhesive joints between pultruded FRP bridge decks and steel girders was investigated experimentally and numerically. Through- thickness tensile stresses occur due to uplift forces caused by the load-bearing behavior of ...
