Infernal modes are unstable in regions of weak magnetic shear and significant pressure gradients. These modes comprise a broad class of instabilities, encompassing interchange modes and kink modes, with both short and long length scales. Toroidal effects a ...

The Thermal Helium Beam (THB) is a diagnostic for simultaneously measuring the electron temperature and density profiles of the plasma edge and scrape off layer (SOL). It exploits the line ratio technique of selected He line intensities, emitted by He gas ...

The atmospheric layer adjacent to the earth's surface is of crucial importance for weather models due to the exchange of energy between the surface and the atmosphere. This exchange is dependent on the various surface properties and influences the state of ...

DeePMD-kit is a powerful open-source software package that facilitates molecular dynamics simulations using machine learning potentials known as Deep Potential (DP) models. This package, which was released in 2017, has been widely used in the fields of phy ...

Resonant sloshing in circular cylinders was studied by Faltinsen et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 804, 2016, pp. 608-645), whose theory was used to describe steady-state resonant waves due to a time-harmonic container's elliptic orbits. In the limit of longitu ...

In social learning, a group of agents linked by a graph topology collect data and exchange opinions on some topic of interest, represented by a finite set of hypotheses. Traditional social learning algorithms allow all agents in the network to gain full co ...

With increasing urbanization and depleting reserves of raw materials for construction, sustainable management of existing infrastructure will be an important challenge in this century. Structural sensing has the potential to increase knowledge of infrastru ...

Critical statistical mechanics and Conformal Field Theory (CFT) are conjecturally connected since the seminal work of Beliavin et al. (Nucl Phys B 241(2):333-380, 1984). Both exhibit exactly solvable structures in two dimensions. A long-standing question ( ...

This work, together with its companion paper, Secco, Samuroff et al. [Phys. Rev. D 105, 023515 (2022)], present the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 cosmic-shear measurements and cosmological constraints based on an analysis of over 100 million source galaxies. W ...

Observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal emitted by neutral hydrogen represent a promising probe of large-scale structure in the universe. However, the cosmological 21-cm signal is challenging to observe due to astrophysical foregrounds which are severa ...

We study an attractive scenario, "Sleptonic SUSY", which reconciles the 125 GeV Higgs scalar and the non-observation of superpartners thus far with potentially pivotal roles for slepton phenomenology: providing viable ongoing targets for LHC discovery, inc ...

Divertor detachment is investigated on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) for conventional and alternative double-null (DN) magnetic geometries in L-mode, Ohmic density ramps and then compared to precisely matched single-null (SN) geometries. The p ...

Simulations can be used to accelerate the characterization and discovery of materials. Here we Review how electronic-structure methods such as density functional theory work, what properties they can be used to predict and how they can be used to design ma ...

Pt-group metal (PGM)-free catalysts of the Me-N-C type based on abundant and inexpensive elements have gained importance in the field of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis due to their promising ORR-activities. Their insufficient stability, h ...

The Medipix4 chip is the latest member of the family of Medipix pixel detector readout chips aimed at high rate spectroscopic X-ray imaging. Unlike its predecessors, it will be possible to tile the chip on all 4 sides permitting seamless large area coverag ...

JT-60SA, the largest tokamak that will operate before ITER, has been designed and built jointly by Japan and Europe, and is due to start operation in 2020. Its main missions are to support ITER exploitation and to contribute to the demonstration fusion rea ...

We combine theory, numerical simulation, and experiments to investigate the breakup of two identical droplets entering a Y-junction with controlled spatial offset by which the second droplet trails the first. Based on fully resolved 3D simulations, we desc ...

Solid-like behavior at low energies and long distances is usually associated with the spontaneous breaking of spatial translations at microscopic scales, as in the case of a lattice of atoms. We exhibit three quantum field theories that are renormalizable, ...

Microturbulence driven by plasma instabilities is in most cases the dominant cause of heat and particle loss from the core of magnetic confinement fusion devices and therefore presents a major challenge in achieving burning plasma conditions. The role of p ...

Cosmic string networks offer one of the best prospects for detection of cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The combined incoherent GW emission of a large number of string loops leads to a stochastic GW background (SGWB), which encodes the properties o ...
