Lagrangian tracer simulations are deployed to investigate processes influencing vertical and horizontal dispersion of anthropogenic pollution in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Alaskan Layered Pollution and Chemical Analysis (ALPACA) 2022 field campaign. Sim ...

This study evaluated the possibilities of energy transition in Cuba 2030. Cuba is currently in a vulnerable energy situation since it strongly depends on the importation of fossil energy. Strategies based on intermittent RES (solar and wind) can reduce thi ...

Solid-State Transformers are conventionally based on a multi-stage architecture, with an input and/or an output AC/DC converter (for interfacing with the AC grid and/or the load), and with an isolated DC/DC conversion stage (to provide insulation and volta ...

Solar photovoltaics (PV) will play an important role in decarbonising the energy system. To date, most assessments of PV transition pathways focus on least-cost aspects, without neither considering the time needed to achieve a substantial PV deployment, no ...

This paper focuses on the distributionally robust dispatch for integrated transmission-distribution (ITD) systems via distributed optimization. Existing distributed algorithms usually require synchronization of all subproblems, which could be hard to scale ...

Climate induced extreme weather events and weather variations will affect both the demand of energy and the resilience of energy supply systems. The specific potential impact of extreme events on energy systems has been difficult to quantify due to the unp ...

This thesis develops optimization-based techniques for the control of distributed energy resources to provide multiple services to the power network. It is divided into three parts. The first part of this thesis focuses on the development of a framework f ...

Greenhouse gas emission mitigation is one of the main motivations for increasing the use of biomass in providing environmentally friendly value-added products. The pulp and paper industry is a promising sector for the integration of biorefinery pathways. A ...

Environmental performance assessment of the built environment tends to focus mostly on operational final energy consumption of buildings located within a specific context. Such a limited scope prevents broader usability of findings in practice. In Switzerl ...

High-temperature latent heat thermal energy storage systems offer compact storage solutions, benefiting from the large latent heat of phase change materials. Common challenges in their design process are the low thermal conductivity of the phase change mat ...

In this paper, we present a compact, wearable piezoelectric on-body harvesting system that uses a small eccentric mass from a common watch movement to mechanically deflect a set of micromachined piezoelectric cantilevers when excited by the low frequency m ...

Energy balance and ancillary services provided by distributed storage systems to active distribution networks represent two aspects of a single problem that needs to be properly treated in view of the typical distribution networks parameters. In this conte ...
