The invention relates to a gate unit (22) for controlling a gate commutated thyristor (21), comprising: - a voltage selector (26) for selectively applying a high supply potential (Vpos), a middle supply potential (Vmid), and a low supply potential (Vneg); ...

Inductive magnetic sensors are needed for tokamak operation to provide the low-frequency (LF) measurements leading to the equilibrium reconstruction and to monitor the higher frequency (HF) instabilities; the HF magnetic sensors are often also used as a ba ...

The integration of technology in the medical field has greatly improved accuracy in diagnoses, thus leading to more effective treatments. Wearable and implantable medical devices offer great potential for remote patient monitoring, particularly for heart f ...

This paper presents a novel method for the measure of the cross-sectional area (CSA) of an artery to be used for the direct and continuous (24/7) monitoring of cardiac output (CO). The method is based on the inductance change of an anchoring loop mounted o ...

The control strategy to discharge a capacitive load such as a dielectric elastomer actuator charged to several kilo-volts is critical to obtain a safe and reliable actuation. In the case of this publication, an ultra-high voltage bidirectional flyback conv ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have extremely advantageous characteristics such as lightness, compactness, flexibility, and large displacements. However, in order to operate, they can require voltages in the order of several thousands of volts. Thus ...

This paper analyzes the effectiveness of the integration of the series inductor into the medium frequency transformer used for series resonant or dual active bridge converters - galvanically isolated DC-DC converters for high-power medium-voltage (solid st ...

This paper presents the critical parasitic elements of coupled inductors and their influence when designing a low input (12V) and ultra-high output voltage (>4000V) DC-DC Flyback Converter. The aim is to design a compact converter capable to supply the ult ...

This letter introduces a reconfigurable planar square-coil-shaped inductor exploiting as the tuning mechanism the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) of a vanadium dioxide (VO2) switch placed in the interwinding space in an unprecedented manner. The VO2 th ...

This paper presents constraints involved in the microelectronic implementation of a transmission line model based on transconductor-capacitor (gm-C) topologies. The presented line model, based on the discretization of a transmission line into a finite numb ...

A low-power pulse position modulation (PPM) demodulator has been developed for remotely powered batteryless implantable devices. The required power for the implantable device is provided by the magnetic coupling with the external array of powering of coils ...

The coupling between an inductive source and the plasma determines the power transfer efficiency and the reflected impedance in the primary circuit. Usually, the plasma coupling is analysed by means of a transformer equivalent circuit, where the plasma ind ...

This paper presents a low power fully integrated class-E power amplifier and its integration with remotely powered sensor system. The class-E power amplifier is suitable solution for low-power applications due to its high power efficiency. However, the req ...

High-frequency, 3D magnetic sensors have been designed and manufactured in-house for installation on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV). To optimize the in-vessel volume occupation, the sensors are based on combining the Low Temperature Co-fired Ce ...

New generations of wireless communication systems require linear efficient RF power amplifiers (PAs) for higher transmission data rates and longer battery life. On the contrary, conventional PAs are normally designed for peak efficiency under maximum outpu ...

A micro-fabrication process is proposed to realize high-thickness spiral inductors for the remote powering of implantable biosensors through inductive link. The process is suitable for different substrates, such as silicon and Pyrex, and enables the fabric ...

One of the key features of Modular Multilevel Converters is the existence of inductors inside the branches that constitute each of their phases. These inductors, which may be coupled or non-coupled, authorize a certain independency in the control of the br ...

An approach based on multi-layer spiral inductors to remotely power implantable sensors is investigated. As compared to single-layer inductors having the same area, multi-layer printed inductors enable a higher efficiency (up to 35% higher) and voltage gai ...

Regenerative braking is presented in many electric traction applications such as electric and hybrid vehicles, lifts and railway. The regenerated energy can be stored for future use, increasing the efficiency of the system. This paper outlines the benefits ...

Electrical contactors are relays for interputing high currents (up to 2000 A). They consist of three main distinct parts: the low voltage circuit, the high voltage circuit and the linear actuator that moves the contact. The purpose of this thesis is to des ...
