We perform an error analysis of a fully discretised Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin Dynamical Low Rank (SUPG-DLR) method for random time-dependent advection-dominated problems. The time integration scheme has a splitting-like nature, allowing for potenti ...

The goal of this work is to use anisotropic adaptive finite elements for the numerical simulation of aluminium electrolysis. The anisotropic adaptive criteria are based on a posteriori error estimates derived for simplified problems. First, we consider an ...

Devices fabricated from Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs) are gaining popularity in research and application. The multiscale characteristics require special attention. Solving the quasi-statics Maxwell’s equations on such devices consumes huge time and memor ...

The jackknife method gives an internal covariance estimate for large-scale structure surveys and allows model-independent errors on cosmological parameters. Using the SDSS-III BOSS CMASS sample, we study how the jackknife size and number of resamplings imp ...

In this thesis we explore uncertainty quantification of forward and inverse problems involving differential equations. Differential equations are widely employed for modeling natural and social phenomena, with applications in engineering, chemistry, meteor ...

Time-delay cosmography of lensed quasars has achieved 2.4% precision on the measurement of the Hubble constant, H0. As part of an ongoing effort to uncover and control systematic uncertainties, we investigate three potential sources: 1- stellar kinematics, ...

Unlike traditional sensing schemes which rely on discrete point sensors that perform measurements at predetermined positions, distributed optical fiber sensing is a general technique that enables to continuously gather information (typically temperature an ...

Proper modeling of stochastic errors in inertial sensors plays a crucial role in the achievable quality of GNSS-INS integration especially with low-cost inertial sensors. Generalized Method of Wavelet Moments (GMWM) can model the underlying process for suc ...

Objective: Local pulse wave velocity (PWV) can be estimated from the waterhammer equation and is an essential component of wave separation analysis. However, previous studies have demonstrated inaccuracies in the estimations of local PWV due to the presenc ...

Evaluating the action of a matrix function on a vector, that is

x=f(\mathcal M)v

, is an ubiquitous task in applications. When

\mathcal M

is large, one usually relies on Krylov projection methods. In this paper, we provide effective choices for the pole ...

We assess sensible heat-flux parametrizations in stable conditions over snow surfaces by testing and developing stability correction functions for two alpine and two polar test sites. Five turbulence datasets are analyzed with respect to, (a) the validity ...

In this paper we discuss how the information contained in atomistic simulations of homogeneous nucleation should be used when fitting the parameters in macroscopic nucleation models. We show how the number of solid and liquid atoms in such simulations can ...

We propose and analyze a novel Multi Index Monte Carlo (MIMC) method for weak approximation of stochastic models that are described in terms of differential equations either driven by random measures or with random coefficients. The MIMC method is both a s ...

In this article, a finite element error analysis is performed on a class of linear and nonlinear elliptic problems with small uncertain input. Using a perturbation approach, the exact (random) solution is expanded up to a certain order with respect to a pa ...

We analyze the recent Multi-index Stochastic Collocation (MISC) method for computing statistics of the solution of a partial differential equation (PDE) with random data, where the random coefficient is parametrized by means of a countable sequence of term ...

Optical tweezers are commonly used and powerful tools to perform force measurements on the piconewton scale and to detect nanometer-scaled displacements. However, the precision of these instruments relies to a great extent on the accuracy of the calibratio ...

We propose a novel Continuation Multi Level Monte Carlo (CMLMC) algorithm for weak approximation of stochastic models. The CMLMC algorithm solves the given approximation problem for a sequence of decreasing tolerances, ending when the required error tolera ...

This thesis presents results of a research on applications of Brillouin dynamic gratings - distributed reflectors that can be dynamically created in an optical fibre by two optical waves. A basic theory of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is introduce ...

In this work we discuss the dynamically orthogonal (DO) approximation of time dependent partial differential equations with random data. The approximate solution is expanded at each time instant on a time dependent orthonormal basis in the physical domain ...

This paper presents a methodology for reducing the uncertainty related to the structural behaviour of an existing building in view of a vulnerability assessment regarding future earthquake actions. Estimating the lateral load resistance is a step towards e ...
