Hand gestures are one of the most natural and expressive way for humans to convey information, and thus hand gesture recognition has become a research hotspot in the human-machine interface (HMI) field. In particular, biological signals such as surface ele ...

Displaced communication, whereby individuals communicate regarding a subject that is not immediately present (spatially or temporally), is one of the key features of human language. It also occurs in a few animal species, most notably the honeybee, where t ...

Despite the huge success of deep convolutional neural networks in face recognition (FR) tasks, current methods lack explainability for their predictions because of their ``black-box'' nature. In recent years, studies have been carried out to give an interp ...

Since the birth of Information Theory, researchers have defined and exploited various information measures, as well as endowed them with operational meanings. Some were born as a "solution to a problem", like Shannon's Entropy and Mutual Information. Other ...

The Vehicle Dynamic Model (VDM) based navigation of fixed-wing drones determines the airborne trajectory in conjunction with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. Without Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, this method estimates navigati ...

With the increase in massive digitized datasets of cultural artefacts, social and cultural scientists have an unprecedented opportunity for the discovery and expansion of cultural theory. The WikiArt dataset is one such example, with over 250,000 high qual ...

Speech signal conveys several kinds of information such as a message, speaker identity, emotional state of the speaker and social state of the speaker. Automatic speech assessment is a broad area that refers to using automatic methods to predict human judg ...

Most prosthetic limbs can autonomously move with dexterity, yet they are not perceived by the user as belonging to their own body. Robotic limbs can convey information about the environment with higher precision than biological limbs, but their actual perf ...

Network information theory studies the communication of information in a network and considers its fundamental limits. Motivating from the extensive presence of the networks in the daily life, the thesis studies the fundamental limits of particular network ...

The management of existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, aging and climate change. Civil infrastructure often has hidden reserve capacity because of conservative approaches used in design and during constructi ...

Wyner's common information is a measure that quantifies and assesses the commonality between two random variables. Based on this, we introduce a novel two-step procedure to construct features from data, referred to as Common Information Components Analysis ...

Face recognition has become a popular authentication tool in recent years. Modern state-of-the-art (SOTA) face recognition methods rely on deep neural networks, which extract discriminative features from face images. Although these methods have high recogn ...

The human face plays an essential role in social interactions as it brings information about someone's identity, state of mind, or mood. People are, by nature, very good at catching this non-spoken information. Therefore, scientists have been interested in ...

This Review discusses non-invasive and invasive technologies for conveying artificial sensory feedback through bionic hands. ...

In developed countries, the management of existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, aging and climate change. Due to conservative approaches in construction design and practice, infrastructure often has hidden re ...

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) can produce percepts that mimic somatic sensation and, thus, has potential as an approach to sensorize prosthetic limbs. However, it is not known whether ICMS could recreate act ...

Face recognition is a mature field in biometrics in which several systems have been proposed over the last three decades. Such systems are extremely reliable under controlled recording conditions and it has been deployed in the field in critical tasks, suc ...

Neuroprosthetics and neuromodulation represent a promising field for several related applications in the central and peripheral nervous system, such as the treatment of neurological disorders, the control of external robotic devices, and the restoration of ...

There has been growing interest in studying connections between generalization error of learning algorithms and information measures. In this work, we generalize a result that employs the maximal leakage, a measure of leakage of information, and explore ho ...

This thesis is devoted to information-theoretic aspects of community detection. The importance of community detection is due to the massive amount of scientific data today that describes relationships between items from a network, e.g., a social network. I ...
