The thesis will discuss how small objects such as bacteria and viruses can be manipulated on-chip using light via Photonic crystals (PhCs). In particular, PhCs could be used in the context of novel fast antimicrobial susceptibility tests (ASTs). We will se ...

Electrowetting on a Dielectric (EWOD) uses electric fields to control droplet shape and motion on solid insulating surfaces, offering silent manipulation without moving parts. A single EWOD electrode allows manipulation of droplet curvature, enabling liqui ...

Generative language models (LMs) have become omnipresent across data science. For a wide variety of tasks, inputs can be phrased as natural language prompts for an LM, from whose output the solution can then be extracted. LM performance has consistently be ...

Microwave sensors integrated with microfluidic platforms can provide the size and permittivity of single cells and microparticles. Among the microwave sensor topologies, the planar arrangement of electrodes is a popular choice owing to the ease of fabricat ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials offer potential as substrates for biosensing devices, as their properties can be engineered to tune interactions between the surface and biomolecules. Yet, not many methods can measure these interactions in a liquid environme ...

This work reports on the implementation of a fiber-array with attached microlenses in the balanced-detection Interferometric Cavity-Assisted Photothermal Spectroscopy (ICAPS) scheme, enabling a highly compact probe laser beam path. The sample probe and the ...

In this thesis, we explored on-chip high-resolution imaging of the fate of intestinal bacteria and bacterial products in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). In the first part, we carried out high-resolution z-stack fluorescent imaging of Red Fluorescent P ...

Crop maps are crucial for agricultural monitoring and food management and can additionally support domain-specific applications, such as setting cold supply chain infrastructure in developing countries. Machine learning (ML) models, combined with freely-av ...

Reading out neuronal activity from three-dimensional (3D) functional imaging requires segmenting and tracking individual neurons. This is challenging in behaving animals if the brain moves and deforms. The traditional approach is to train a convolutional n ...

Time has always been a central factor in understanding the challenges of daily mobility. For a long time, and still today, methods of economic evaluation of transport projects have monetized time savings so that they can be included in the cost–benefit ana ...

A strategic roadmap for noncarbonized fuels is a global priority, and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is a key focus of the Paris Agreement to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures. In this context, hydrogen is a promising noncarbonized fue ...

Pipelines for extracting oil, gas, water, and supporting energy systems are part of the infrastructure of extractive sites, especially marked in countries with less urbanized areas. Throughout the twentieth century, such regions were influenced by economic ...

In this work we consider an online learning problem, called Online k-Clustering with Moving Costs, at which a learner maintains a set of k facilities over T rounds so as to minimize the connection cost of an adversarially selected sequence of clients. The ...

ML-based edge devices may face memory and computational errors that affect applications' reliability and performance. These errors can be the result of particular working conditions (e.g., radiation areas in physical experiments or avionics) or could be th ...

In this paper, we consider electric vehicle charging facilities that offer various levels of service, i.e., charging rates, for varying prices such that rational users choose a level of service that minimizes the total cost to themselves including an oppor ...

Alumni studies are often overlooked in engineering education research, despite holding great potential for improving engineering programmes and creating the links that are missed when it comes to university-workplace transitions. Besides better understandi ...

Despite the importance of using artifacts during the design thinking process, there is a limited understanding of the influence of tangibles with lower perceptual richness on design thinking skills within educational settings. It is speculated that tangibl ...

The establishment of company towns played a significant role in developing both urban and rural areas in Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By combining historical and urban research, this study provides findings about the industry's pol ...

This article explores the conception, design, and implementation of a hypertextual map that we call hypermap. Using Giovanni Nolli's 1748 map of the city of Rome as a backbone, we conducted an experiment based on one of the routes defined by Giuseppe Vasi' ...

The developed world is built on the fact that energy is readily available and functionally infinite. The electricity from the wall, the gas at the station, and the heat in our homes are reliable and low-cost. But this comfort is so far only possible throug ...
