Nanotechnology is regarded as the enabling technology of the 21st century. However, only a relatively small number of nano-enabled medical and healthcare products finally made their way to the market. There are several reasons why such innovative approache ...

The spatial arrangement of Ca2+ channels and vesicles remains unknown for most CNS synapses, despite of the crucial importance of this geometrical parameter for the Ca2+ control of transmitter release. At a large model synapse, the calyx of Held, transmitt ...

Essential Tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological diseases, with an estimated 7 million affected individuals in the US; the pathophysiology of the disorder is poorly understood. Recently, we identified a mutation (KCNS2 (Kv9.2), c.1137 T > A, p. ...

Every neuron is part of a network, exerting its function by transforming multiple spatiotemporal synaptic input patterns into a single spiking output. This function is specified by the particular shape and passive electrical properties of the neuronal memb ...

Neurotransmitter-gated ion channels of the Cys-loop receptor family mediate fast neurotransmission throughout the nervous system. The molecular processes of neurotransmitter binding, subsequent opening of the ion channel and ion permeation remain poorly un ...

The brain is a complex biological system composed of a multitude of microscopic processes, which together give rise to computational abilities observed in everyday behavior. Neuronal modeling, consisting of models of single neurons and neuronal networks at ...

Porins, like outer membrane protein G (OmpG) of Escherichia coli, are ideal templates among ion channels for protein and chemical engineering because of their robustness and simple architecture. OmpG shows fast transitions between open and closed states, w ...

Ion channel models are the building blocks of computational neuron models. Their biological fidelity is therefore crucial for the interpretation of simulations. However, the number of published models, and the lack of standardization, make the comparison o ...

Salt sensitive (pea) and salt tolerant (barley) species were used to understand the physiological basis of differential salinity tolerance in crops. Pea plants were much more efficient in restoring otherwise depolarized membrane potential thereby effective ...

Hv1 is a transmembrane four-helix bundle that transports protons in a voltage-controlled manner. Its crucial role in many pathological conditions, including cancer and ischemic brain damage, makes Hv1 a promising drug target. Starting from the recently sol ...

Our recently solved high-resolution structure of the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor (5-HT3R) delivered the first detailed structural insights for a mammalian pentameric ligand-gated ion channel. Based on this structure, we here performed a total of 2.8-μs all-at ...

The scaling of device technologies poses new challenges, not only in circuit design, but also in device modeling, especially because of the short-channel effects and the emergence of novel phenomena like ballistic transport. Nonetheless, it enables the des ...

Brain activity generates extracellular voltage fluctuations recorded as local field potentials (LFPs). It is known that the relevant microvariables, the ionic currents across membranes, jointly generate the macrovariables, the extracellular voltage, but ne ...

The function of membrane proteins is best understood if their structure in the lipid membrane is known. Here, we determined the structure of the mouse serotonin 5-HT3 receptor inserted in lipid bilayers to a resolution of 12 Å without stabilizing antibodie ...

This thesis develops and applies the nanopore tool to probe chemical structures and physical processes at the single-molecule level: from single ions to DNA molecules. Nanopore experiments electrically measure the ionic transport through the pore and its m ...

In this brief, we evidence the link between planar and cylindrical junctionless FETs from the electrostatics point of view. In particular, we show that an approximate solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for junctionless nanowires can be mapped on th ...
