Shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit unique characteristics, enabling them to recover their original shape either upon unloading (pseudoelasticity) or through heating (shape memory effect, SME). Due to their exceptional mechanical properties, the SME, and th ...

The microstructure evolution associated with the cold forming sequence of an Fe-14Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.3Y2O3 grade ferritic stainless steel strengthened by dispersion of nano oxides (ODS) was investigated. The material, initially hot extruded at 1100 degrees C an ...

Photo-electrochemical (PEC) devices allow for converting solar energy into chemical energy and for the production of energetically dense solar fuels. Light absorption, charge separation and transport, electrochemical reactions, and ionic transport are requ ...

In this paper, we propose an analytical stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) algorithm to address the optimal management problem of price-maker community energy storage. As a price-maker, energy storage smooths price differences, thus decreasing energy arb ...

Two widely used sub-grid scale models namely: the standard and the dynamic Smagorinsky models were tested in a simulation of the flow in a thermally driven 3D cavity at turbulent Rayleigh number Ra = 10(9). The cubical cavity of 0.7 m side-length is set to ...

Large eddy simulations of tip vortex cavitation (TVC) around an elliptical hydrofoil is performed to study its scale effect. A satisfying agreement is obtained between the numerical and experimental data. It indicates that the scale effect of TVC is remark ...

The aim of this study is to evaluate how much the changes in the concrete mix design, which enable carbon footprint reduction, are impacting mechanical properties and predicted service life of concrete structure. The starting point of this study was concre ...

We study the problem of estimating an unknown function from noisy data using shallow ReLU neural networks. The estimators we study minimize the sum of squared data-fitting errors plus a regularization term proportional to the squared Euclidean norm of the ...

Electric vehicle charging facilities offer their capacity constrained electric charge and parking to users for a fee. As electric vehicle adoption grows, so too does the potential for excessive resource utilization. In this paper, we study how prices set b ...

This paper describes the shaking table tests carried out at the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE) to investigate the seismic behaviour of four configurations of stacked concrete blocks, commonly used at the Euro ...

The world by and large has adopted the The Paris Agreement, which commits any signing party to cut greenhouse emissions drastically and prevent global heating above 2 °C beyond pre-industrial levels. For this ambitious goal to be met, ratifying states need ...

Closed-loop neural implants based on continuous brain activity recording and intracortical microstimulation are extremely effective and promising devices to monitor and address many neurodegenerative diseases. The efficiency of these devices depends on the ...

The process synthesis and optimization methods used in this work include simulation of biomass gasification, hydrogen and synthetic natural gas production, and jet fuel production via a Fisher Tropsch unit. An energy integration approach, carried out by th ...

Promisingapplications in photonics are driven by the ability tofabricate crystal-quality metal thin films of controlled thicknessdown to a few nanometers. In particular, these materials exhibit ahighly nonlinear response to optical fields owing to the indu ...

Perching in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offers the possibility of extending the range of aerial robots beyond the limits of their batteries. It has been a topic of intense study for multirotor UAVs. Perching in winged UAVs is harder because a kinetic e ...

Dielectric elastomer transducers are elastic capacitors that respond to mechanical or electrical stress. They can be used in applications such as millimeter-sized soft robots and harvesters of the energy contained in ocean waves. The dielectric component o ...

Rechargeable sodium (Na) metal batteries (SMBs) provide an alternative energy-dense, low-cost energy storage system beyond prevailing Li-ion technologies. However, their practical deployment requires the performance evaluation of Na anodes on the device le ...

Despite the ever-growing interest in micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) as a promising power source for microelectronics, their low areal energy density has plagued practical applications. Herein, accordion foldable MSCs (af-MSCs) are presented as a cell archite ...

About 50% of all hydropower plants (HPPs) worldwide were originally commissioned more than 40 years ago, so that the advanced age of the fleet is a major concern across all continents, and especially in Europe. The modernization of HPPs can generate severa ...

Storage is an important domain of the energy sector, with its traditional, classical solutions for smaller and larger amounts of energy. Energy storage has become of higher importance in relation with the development of alternative energy sources, leading ...
