In minimally invasive surgery, such as cardiac ablation, magnetically steered catheters made of variable-stiffness materials can enable higher dexterity and higher force application to human tissue. However, the long transition time between soft and rigid ...

The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system is among the technologies applied to exploit waste heat in vehicles. Since common organic fluids have lower latent heat than water, higher mass flow rates are required to convert the same waste heat, considerably incr ...

Incorporating pressurized fluidic circuits into textiles can enable muscular support, thermoregulation, and haptic feedback in a convenient wearable form factor. However, conventional rigid pumps, with their associated noise and vibration, are unsuitable f ...

Interest in bioinspired peristaltic pumps has grown in popularity among the scientific community in the last decade thanks to their extreme flexibility and their intrinsic compliance. In this paper, we propose a soft peristaltic pump exploiting ballooning. ...

We report on an InP/Si3N4 hybrid integrated ECL that relies on 3D-printed coupling elements such as intra-cavity photonic wire bonds and facet-attached microlenses. We demonstrate 90 nm tuning range, SMSR above 60 dB, and intrinsic linewidths of 979 Hz. We ...

A non-evaporable getter pump using the ZAO alloy was installed on TCV and operated during the 2019 experimental campaign. The pump performance, determined from in-situ pumping speed measurements, indicates that current getter pump technologies are well sui ...

In the framework of the XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European Project, one of the demonstrators focuses on the implementation of the hydraulic short-circuit on the pump storage power plant of Grand-Maison owned by Electricite De France (EDF). The Grand-Maison power p ...

Soft wearable robots could provide support for lower and upper limbs, increase weight lifting ability, decrease energy required for walking and running, and even provide haptic feedback. However, to date most of wearable robots are based on electromagnetic ...

The rail link between Geneva Cornavin Station, Eaux-Vives Station and Annemasse (CEVA) is currently under construction including a cut-and-cover tunnel built by slurry walls located in the alluvium of the Foron River. The covered trench cuts the groundwate ...

The present research aims at understanding the mass transfer of air into water in a reversible pump turbine operating in condenser mode. In particular, the diffusion of oxygen through the water free-surface both in the vaneless gap between the impeller bla ...

Electrically Driven Heat Pumps (EDHPs) have been identified as a key technology to reduce the energy consumption in the domestic space heating sector. However, since EDHPs require electrical power, they face issues related to network overload at peak-time, ...

Purpose To probe the cardiac metabolism of carbohydrates and short chain fatty acids simultaneously in vivo following the injection of a hyperpolarized 13C-labeled substrate mixture prepared using photo-induced nonpersistent radicals. Methods Droplets of m ...

The paper explores the additional services that Full Size Frequency Converter, FSFC, solution can provide for the case of an existing pumped storage power plant of 2x210 MW, for which conversion from fixed speed to variable speed is investigated with a foc ...

Systematic errors induced by distortions in the pump pulse of conventional Brillouin distributed fiber sensors are thoroughly investigated. Experimental results, supported by a theoretical analysis, demonstrate that the two probe sidebands in standard Bril ...

Runaway electrons are generated in a magnetized plasma when the parallel electric field exceeds a critical value. For such electrons with energies typically reaching tens of MeV, the Abrahamâ Lorentzâ Dirac (ALD) radiation force, in reaction to the synch ...

We report on 1270 nm vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) with up to 59% conversion efficiency and maximum output power of 8.5 W (pump limited), at 5 degrees C heat sink temperature. These VECSELs comprised wafer-fused gain mirrors in ...

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) from centrosymmetric nanostructures originating from the breaking of inversion symmetry at their surfaces is a well-known phenomenon and is extensively used as a surface probe in nonlinear optical microscopy. In recent year ...

The concept studied in this work is a low power ORC-ORC heat pump system (providing about 20 kW heat at the condenser) and that is composed of an ORC power cycle driving a reversed ORC heat pump cycle, both cycles using the same fluid. The centrifugal comp ...

AC electroosmosis is a convenient valveless method to pump liquids, whilst avoiding electrolysis and gas generation. Basic designs presented in the literature often have limited velocity or pressure capabilities. This paper reports a simple approach to the ...

We present the experimental demonstration of broadband four-wave mixing in a 2.5 cm-long segment of AsSe Chalcogenide microstructured fiber. The parametric mixing was driven by a continuous-wave pump compatible with data signal wavelength conversion. Four- ...
