The ability to reason, plan and solve highly abstract problems is a hallmark of human intelligence. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, propelled by deep neural networks, have revolutionized disciplines like computer vision and natural language ...

Natural language processing has experienced significant improvements with the development of Transformer-based models, which employ self-attention mechanism and pre-training strategies. However, these models still present several obstacles. A notable issue ...

We present the HIPE-2022 shared task on named entity processing in multilingual historical documents. Following the success of the first CLEF-HIPE-2020 evaluation lab, this edition confronts systems with the challenges of dealing with more languages, learn ...

Object-centric learning has gained significant attention over the last years as it can serve as a powerful tool to analyze complex scenes as a composition of simpler entities. Well-established tasks in computer vision, such as object detection or instance ...

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), as the assistance of speech communication between pilots and air-traffic controllers, can significantly reduce the complexity of the task and increase the reliability of transmitted information. ASR application can lead ...

Recent years have witnessed a rise in real-world data captured with rich structural information that can be better depicted by multi-relational or heterogeneous graphs. However, research on relational representation learning has so far mostly focused on th ...

Machine Translation (MT) has made considerable progress in the past two decades, particularly after the introduction of neural network models (NMT). During this time, the research community has mostly focused on modeling and evaluating MT systems at the se ...

Data models capture the structure and characteristic properties of data entities, e.g., in terms of a database schema or an ontology. They are the backbone of diverse applications, reaching from information integration, through peer-to-peer systems and ele ...

Defining and identifying duplicate records in a dataset is a challenging task which grows more complex when the modeled entities themselves are hard to delineate. In the geospatial domain, it may not be clear where a mountain, stream, or valley ends and be ...

Multimedia databases are growing rapidly in size in the digital age. To increase the value of these data and to enhance the user experience, there is a need to make these videos searchable through automatic indexing. Because people appearing and talking in ...

Recognition of real-world entities is crucial for most NLP applications. Since its introduction some twenty years ago, named entity processing has undergone a significant evolution with, among others, the definition of new tasks (e.g. entity linking) and t ...

Massive digitization of archival material, coupled with automatic document processing techniques and data visualisation tools offers great opportunities for reconstructing and exploring the past. Unprecedented wealth of historical data (e.g. names of perso ...

[Context] As opposed to the traditional approach to problem solving, which limits the scope of the solution to the stated problem, the mandate for services is to go deeper and focus on the value that the proposed solution creates for the entities affected ...

One of the key challenges to realize automated processing of the information on the Web, which is the central goal of the Semantic Web, is related to the entity matching problem. There are a number of tools that reliably recognize named entities, such as p ...

A method of data retrieval from a data repository in response to a query having either list of keywords and/or list of attribute-value pairs, the method comprising the steps of: providing an inverted index generated from the data repository, the inverted i ...

The amount of multimedia content is on a constant increase, and people interact with each other and with content on a daily basis through social media systems. The goal of this thesis was to model and understand emerging online communities that revolve aro ...

We present the Entity Name System (ENS), an enabling infrastructure, which can host descriptions of named entities and provide unique identifiers, on large-scale. In this way, it opens new perspectives to realize entity-oriented, rather than keyword-orient ...

The large-scale adoption of the Web 2.0 paradigm has revolutionized the way we interact with the Web today. End-users, so far mainly passive consumers of information are now becoming active information producers, creating, uploading, and commenting on all ...

New network types require new security concepts. Surprisingly, trust – the ultimate goal of security – has not evolved as much as other concepts. In particular, the traditional notion of building trust in entities seems inadequate in an ephemeral environme ...

Geographical Information Science and Cultural Anthropology are aimed to collaborate on development projects dedicated to indigenous communities. This fact is first based on a growing intention to integrate the reality and the perception of the development ...
