Semiconductor materials have given rise to today's digital technology and consumer electronics. Widespread adoption is closely linked to the ability to process and integrate them in devices at scale. Where flexibility and large surfaces are required, such ...

The ionic defects of hetero-junction interfaces always attract and trap carriers via surface electrostatic forces, which are crucial for the efficiency and intrinsic stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) ...

Graphite has been intensively studied, yet its electron spins dynamics remains an unresolved problem even 70 years after the first experiments. The central quantities, the longitudinal (T-1) and transverse (T-2) relaxation times were postulated to be equal ...

Recent technical progress demonstrates the possibility of stacking together virtually any combination of atomically thin crystals of van der Waals bonded compounds to form new types of heterostructures and interfaces. As a result, there is the need to unde ...

We fabricate and study quantum dot structures incorporating quasi-one-dimensional excited states. The structures are realized by graded bandgap GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wires self-formed inside inverted tetrahedral pyramids. The ground state transitions exhibit ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) emit near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence that is ideal for optical sensing. However, the low quantum yields diminish the sensor’s signal-to-noise ratio and limits the penetration depths for in vivo measurements. In this ...

In this thesis, the electronic structures of low-dimensional carbon allotropes have been studied. In particular, the spatially-resolved photocurrent responses of devices comprising carbon nanostructures were investigated through scanning photocurrent micro ...

The fluorescent imidazolium salt (1,3-bis(9-anthracenylmethyl)imidazolium chloride, [bamim]Cl) has been grafted onto the surfaces of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using an ion exchange strategy based on metathesis of the K+ ion in CO2K derivatized ...

A large number of characterization tools for semiconductor based heterostructures are available nowadays. Most of these techniques deliver high temporal resolution (down to hundreds of femtoseconds) or good spatial resolution (down to sub nanometer resolut ...

The fabrication of nanostructures using III-V semiconductors results in materials with different physical properties than the bulk materials. Their optical and electronic properties are tailored and developed on a large scale for the fabrication of optical ...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have garnered significant interest for their applications in optical biosensing. SWCNTs exhibit a sensitive and photostable fluorescence in the near-infrared (NIR) range, allowing for the continuous monitoring of tar ...

Lubricity, a phenomenon which enables the ease of motion of objects, and wear resistance, which minimizes material damage or degradation, are important fundamental characteristics for sustainable technology developments. Ultrathin coatings that promote lub ...

The photophysics of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is intensively studied due to their potential application in light harvesting and optoelectronics. Excited states of SWCNTs form strongly bound electron-hole pairs, excitons, of which only singlet e ...

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are among the few photostable optical emitters that are ideal for sensing, imaging, drug delivery, and monitoring of protein activity. These applications often require strategies for immobilizing prote ...

Optical sensors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) demonstrate tradeoffs that limit their use in in vivo and in vitro environments. Sensor characteristics are primarily governed by the non-covalent wrapping used to suspend the hydrophobic SWC ...

The thermal drawing process is emerging as a versatile platform for the development of multimaterial fiber devices and advanced textiles for sensing, energy harvesting or medical applications, owing to the possibility to integrate insulators, conductors an ...
