Recent years have witnessed a growing integration of automatic control into a wide range of cyber-physical systems, including electrical grids and autonomous transportation networks. These systems operate in uncertain and dynamic environments, exhibit comp ...

Depth sensing is essential for intelligent computer vision applications, but it often suffers from low range precision and spatial resolution. To address this problem, we propose a novel framework that combines non-uniform sampling and reconstruction based ...

Photometric stereo, a computer vision technique for estimating the 3D shape of objects through images captured under varying illumination conditions, has been a topic of research for nearly four decades. In its general formulation, photometric stereo is an ...

We study a class of stochastic nonconvex optimization in the form of min(x is an element of X) F(x) := E-xi[f (phi(x, xi))], that is, F is a composition of a convex function f and a random function phi. Leveraging an (implicit) convex reformulation via a v ...

Distributed learning is the key for enabling training of modern large-scale machine learning models, through parallelising the learning process. Collaborative learning is essential for learning from privacy-sensitive data that is distributed across various ...

Deep learning has emerged as a promising avenue for automatic mapping, demonstrating high efficacy in land cover categorization through various semantic segmentation models. Nonetheless, the practical deployment of these models encounters important challen ...

The remarkable ability of deep learning (DL) models to approximate high-dimensional functions from samples has sparked a revolution across numerous scientific and industrial domains that cannot be overemphasized. In sensitive applications, the good perform ...

Human-centered scene understanding is the process of perceiving and analysing a dynamic scene observed through a network of sensors with emphasis on human-related activities. It includes the visual perception of human-related activities from either single ...

Type C hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a severe neuropsychiatric complication of chronic liver disease, for which the prognosis is poor in the absence of liver transplantation. Cirrhosis in type C HE leads to a toxic accumulation of ammonia in the blood, wh ...

We consider the problem of compressing an information source when a correlated one is available as side information only at the decoder side, which is a special case of the distributed source coding problem in information theory. In particular, we consider ...

The acquisition of high quality maps of gene expression in the rodent brain is of fundamental importance to the neuroscience community. The generation of such datasets relies on registering individual gene expression images to a reference volume, a task en ...

Dense image-based prediction methods have advanced tremendously in recent years. Their remarkable development has been possible due to the ample availability of real-world imagery. While these methods work well on photographs, their abilities do not genera ...

The purpose of this Thesis is to develop, test, and characterize different models attempting to tackle the problem of measurement of galaxy shapes applied in interferometric observations. Shape measurement is a tool for estimating the underlying shear due ...

A central question of machine learning is how deep nets manage to learn tasks in high dimensions. An appealing hypothesis is that they achieve this feat by building a representation of the data where information irrelevant to the task is lost. For image da ...

Spectral imaging is a fundamental diagnostic technique with widespread application. Conventional spectral imaging approaches have intrinsic limitations on spatial and spectral resolutions due to the physical components they rely on. To overcome these physi ...

The successes of deep learning for semantic segmentation can in be, in part, attributed to its scale: a notion that encapsulates the largeness of these computational architectures and the labeled datasets they are trained on. These resource requirements hi ...

We address the detection, tracking, and relative localization of the agents of a drone swarm from a human perspective using a headset equipped with a single camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). We train and deploy a deep neural network detector o ...

Background: Functional connectomes (FCs) have been shown to provide a reproducible individual fingerprint, which has opened the possibility of personalized medicine for neuro/psychiatric disorders. Thus, developing accurate ways to compare FCs is essential ...

The present invention concerns an array processing image reconstruction method comprising: receiving (13) a set of echo waveforms as measurements from the object of interest; defining (15) a measurement model linking an unknown image of the object to the m ...

There are many approaches to weakly-supervised training of networks to segment 2D images. By contrast, existing approaches to segmenting volumetric images rely on full-supervision of a subset of 2D slices of the 3D volume. We propose an approach to volume ...
