Murunskite (K 2 FeCu 3 S 4 ) bridges the two known families of high‐temperature superconductors, cuprates and iron‐pnictides, structurally and electronically. Like these families, murunskite exhibits an antiferromagnetic (AF)‐like response with an ordered ...

The molecular structure of water is dynamic, with intermolecular hydrogen (H) bond interactions being modified by both electronic charge transfer and nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). Electronic charge transfer and NQEs potentially change under acidic or bas ...

Before a droplet can contact a surface during impact, it must first displace the air beneath it. Over a wide range of impact velocities, the droplet first squeezes the air into a thin film, enhancing its resistance to drainage; this slows the progress of t ...

Elastomer composites are prepared by infiltrating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into a porous ceramic structure of nanoparticles. This method differs from the conventional approach, where particles are dispersed into the polymer matrix, since here, the polym ...

A non-trivial interplay rules the relationship between the structure and the chemophysical properties of a nanoparticle. In this context, characterization experiments, molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations may allow the varia ...

A series of organometallic complexes containing an alkynylphosphinegold(I) fragment and a phenylene-terpyridine moiety connected together by flexible linker have been prepared using the specially designed terpyridine ligands. The compounds were studied cry ...

An SEM in situ uniaxial tensile testing setup allowing HR-EBSD acquisition during deformation was used to study the extension twinning mechanism in magnesium(Mg) at the micron scale. Structures were fabricated with two different crystal orientations, respe ...

The goal of this thesis is to explore the "neglected" third dimension of layered materials, by studying the interlayer charge dynamics through dc conductivity, optical spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. This project was designed to respond to the gro ...

Enteroviruses are common agents of infectious disease that are spread by the fecal-oral route. They are readily inactivated by mild heat, which causes the viral capsid to disintegrate or undergo conformational change. While beneficial for the thermal treat ...

Artificial molecular machines (AMMs) built from mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) can use energy ratchets to control the unidirectional motion of their component parts. These energy ratchets are operated by the alteration of kinetic barriers and th ...

Non-surfactant-induced synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) is gaining increasing interest because of their low toxicity and simple purification compared to conventional surfactant-based methods. Tannic acid (TA), considered as a glucose-de ...

It is established that the annealing twin boundaries of austenite act as nucleation sites for the martensitic transformation. In the present study, we observe that in surface martensite the transformation only takes place for twin boundaries that are appro ...

Near eutectic Al-Cu droplets were rapidly solidified by Impulse Atomization. A wide range of microstructural scales was obtained at different cooling rates and undercoolings. The micrographs of the investigated samples revealed two distinct zones of differ ...

For decades, the understanding of life has been focused on its most fundamental building blocks: molecules. Deciphering the dynamic activities of protein molecules in human cells is of vital significance for fundamental and clinical studies. The minuscule ...
