We consider the primitive relay channel, where the source sends a message to the relay and to the destination, and the relay helps the communication by transmitting an additional message to the destination via a separate channel. Two well-known coding tech ...

In his landmark paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication," the founding father of information theory and coding theory, Claude E. Shannon, established the largest rate at which reliable communication is possible and he revealed that the key to this re ...

Video streaming from remotely controlled moving platforms such as drones have stringent constraints in terms of delay. In some applications such videos have to provide real-time visual feedback to the pilot with an acceptable distortion while satisfying hi ...

The implementation of a 25.6-Gb/s four-level pulse-amplitude-modulation (4-PAM) reduced-state sliding-block Viterbi detector (VD) is presented. The power consumption of the VD is 105 orilV at a supply voltage of 0.7 V, corresponding to an energy efficiency ...

The exponential growth of Internet traffic and related demands for higher communication speed pushes processor-to-processor and processor-to-memory interconnects to provide further higher data-rate. Often time, processor-to-memory interconnectsâ speed is ...

A time-division multiplexing (TDM) digital channel coding scheme for wireline multi-drop interfaces has been proposed. Shaping the TX spectrum to avoid channel frequency notches, the proposed digital TDM signaling reduces inter-symbol interference (ISI) an ...

A time-division multiplexing (TDM) digital channel coding scheme with inter-symbol interference (ICI) reduction property for multi-drop memory interfaces has been proposed. Shaping the TX spectrum to avoid channel frequency notches, the proposed digital TD ...

The general subject considered in this thesis is a recently discovered coding technique, polar coding, which is used to construct a class of error correction codes with unique properties. In his ground-breaking work, Arikan proved that this class of codes, ...

The usefulness of lattice codes is investigated for two-user Gaussian interference channels (IC). A coding scheme based on the compute-and-forward technique is shown to achieve the capacity region of the Gaussian IC under strong interference. The proposed ...

Recent advances in data processing and communication systems have led to a continuous increase in the amount of data communicated over today’s networks. These large volumes of data pose new challenges on the current networking infrastructure that only offe ...

The possibility to customize Simplex coding for long range Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis is demonstrated by “colouring” the sequences in the frequency domain. The coding gain is identical to the traditional intensity-modulated Simplex code, though ...

Arikan's polar coding method is extended to two-user multiple-access channels. It is shown that if the two users of the channel use Arikan's construction, the resulting channels will polarize to one of five possible extremals, on each of which uncoded tran ...

Distributed temperature measurements with 1.2 cm resolution based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in standard fibers are reported. High resolution is achieved by phase-coding both pump and probe waves with a high-rate, pseudo-random binary phase c ...

The issue of how to efficiently represent the data collected by a network of microphones recording spatio-temporal acoustic wave fields is addressed. Each sensor node in the network samples the sound field, quantizes the samples and transmits the encoded s ...

Vision sensor networks and video cameras find widespread usage in several applications that rely on effective representation of scenes or analysis of 3D information. These systems usually acquire multiple images of the same 3D scene from different viewpoin ...

Polar coding is a recently invented technique for communication over binary-input memoryless channels. This technique allows one to transmit data at rates close to the symmetric-capacity of such channels with arbitrarily high reliability, using low-complex ...

In point-to-point source-channel communication with a fidelity criterion and a transmission cost constraint, the region of achievable cost and fidelity pairs is completely characterized by Shannon's separation theorem. However, this is in general only true ...

We investigate the use of overcomplete frame representations to correct errors occurring over burst-based transmission channels or channels leading to isolated errors. We show that when the overcomplete signal representation is based on a class of frames, ...

We design a novel class of space-time codes, called linear diversity-embedding space-time block codes (LDE-STBC) where a high-rate STBC is linearly superimposed on a high-diversity STBC without requiring channel knowledge at the transmitter. In applying th ...

Given uncertainty in environment, a conservative approach is to design for the worst case, leading to a game-theoretic situation where the environment is controlled by an adversary. However, in many cases, the uncertainty arises from randomness, not an adv ...
