Mechanical residual stresses within multilayer thin-film device stacks become problematic during thermal changes because of differing thermal expansion and contraction of the various layers. Thin-film photovoltaic (PV) devices are a prime example where thi ...

Sunlight is widely seen as one of the most abundant forms of renewable energy, with photovoltaic cells based on pn junctions being the most commonly used platform attempting to harness it. Unlike in conventional photovoltaic cells, the bulk photovoltaic ef ...

The integration of thin 2D perovskite layers at the 3D PVK/HTL interface is known to improve the power conversion efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, we report a novel approach consisting of mixing two alkyl-based catio ...

Since the birth of Information Theory, researchers have defined and exploited various information measures, as well as endowed them with operational meanings. Some were born as a "solution to a problem", like Shannon's Entropy and Mutual Information. Other ...

Hybrid lead halide perovskites will potentially lead the future energy scenario if highly efficient cells have long-term stability. Here we combine state-of-the art mixed-cation formulations containing formamidinium (FA) and methylammonium (MA), with optim ...

Vocal signalling systems, as used by humans and various non-human animals, exhibit discrete and continuous properties that can naturally be used to express discrete and continuous information, such as distinct words to denote objects in the world and proso ...

Organic semiconductors hold promise to enable scalable, low-cost and high-performance artificial photosynthesis. However, the performance of systems based on organic semiconductors for light-driven water oxidation have remained poor compared with inorganic ...

The quest for lead-free light-absorbing perovskite materials has long been the target of researchers to make the 'star' material friendly to the commercial market. After a summary of different lead-free solar absorbers, we demonstrate a zero-dimensional io ...

The vast chemical space of metal and ligand combinations in Transition Metal Complexes (TMCs) gives rise to a rich variety of electronic excited states with local and non-local character such as intra-ligand (IL), metal-centered (MC), metal-to-ligand (MLCT ...

Amphiphilic sensitizers are central to the function of dye-sensitized solar cells. It is known that the cells performance depends on the molecular arrangement and the density of the dye on the semiconductor surface, but a molecular-level picture of the cel ...

Three novel dyes consisting of a 5,8,15-tris(2-ethylhexyl)-8,15-dihydro-SH-benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b':6,5-b '']tricarbazole (BTC) electron-donating group and a 4,7-bis(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BTBT) pi-bridge with an anchoring group of phen ...

The development of facilely synthesized, dopant-free hole-transporting materials (HTMs) with high efficiency is of great significance for the potential application of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we report two novel indolo[3,2-b]carbazole (ICZ) b ...

Through millions of years of evolution, Nature has accomplished the development of highly efficient and sustainable processes and the idea to understand and copy natural strategies is therefore very appealing. However, in spite of intense experimental and ...

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have become one of the leading thin-film semiconductors for optoelectronics. Their broad application will greatly depend on overcoming the key obstacles associated with poor stability and limited scalability. There has ...

Because of their excellent photoelectric properties, organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (MHPs), such as methylammonium lead triiodide, CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)), and methylammonium lead tribromide, CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr(3)), are of great interest for the ...

Heavy metal-based quantum dots (QDs) have been demonstrated to behave as efficient sensitizers in QD-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), as attested by the countless studies and encouraging efficiencies reported so far. However, their intrinsic toxicity has a ...

The present invention concerns photoelectronic and/or optoelectronic learning device and/or memory device. In an embodiment, the device is a dye- sensitized solar cell. The short circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) of the device, and wherein a degree of a J ...

We propose a new mechanism by which the common electrolyte additive guanidinium thiocyanate (GdmSCN) improves efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We demonstrate that binding of Gdm(+) to TiO2 is weak and does not passivate recombination sites ...

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells are attractive for storing solar energy in chemical bonds through cleaving of water into oxygen and hydrogen. Although hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) is a promising photoanode material owing to its chemical stability, suitable band ...

Tools that assess the limitations of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) made with new materials are critical for progress. Measuring the transient electrical signals (voltage or current) after optically perturbing a DSSC is an approach which can give infor ...
