Candida albicans is an emerging multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen representing an important source of invasive disease in humans and generating high healthcare costs worldwide. The development of a rapid and simple antifungal susceptibility test ( ...

IntroductionPatients undergoing cancer treatment by radiation therapy commonly develop Candida albicans infections (candidiasis). Such infections are generally treated by antifungals that unfortunately also induce numerous secondary effects in the patient. ...

The fast emergence of multi-resistant pathogenic yeasts is caused by the extensive-and sometimes unnecessary-use of broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs. To rationalise the use of broad-spectrum antifungals, it is essential to have a rapid and sensitive syst ...

Novel metal-oxides (MOx) semiconductors for thin-film transistors (TFTs) are being developed as they can offer superior electric performances over organic-based counterparts. MOx TFTs processed on foil could be exploited in smart labels as RFID and NFC tag ...

Yeast resistance to antifungal drugs is a major public health issue. Fungal adhesion onto the host mucosal surface is still a partially unknown phenomenon that is modulated by several actors among which fibronectin plays an important role. Targeting the ye ...

A series of organotin(IV) derivatives R3SnL (1-3), R2SnLCl (4-6) and R2SnL2 (7-9) (where R = Me, Bu, Ph and L = 4-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-ylmethyl)piperazine-1-carbodithioate) were prepared from the reaction of 4-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-ylmethyl)piperazine-1 ...

There is a need for coatings for biomedical devices and implants that can prevent the attachment of fungal pathogens while allowing human cells and tissue to appose without cytotoxicity. Here, the authors study whether a poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (P ...

A series of tri- and diorganotin(IV) derivatives of 4-(2-thienyl)butyric acid have been synthesized by the reaction of ligand acid with tri- and diorganotin salts in 1:1 and 2:1 molar ratios, respectively. The synthesized compounds have been confirmed by C ...

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are an important health issue around the world. The consequences of HAIs incidence include prolonged hospital stays, increased resistance of microorganisms to antimicrobials, higher costs for health systems and for t ...

Using direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS), we generated flexible copper polyester surfaces (Cu-PES) and investigated their antimicrobial activity against a range of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens including eight Gram-positive isolates (three me ...

This thesis addresses the preparation of antibacterial surfaces for hospital facilities taking biomedical thin polymer films, textiles and catheter as probes. Magnetron sputtering is used to apply the coatings leading to fast bacterial inactivation in the ...

Liver receptor homologue-1 (LRH-1) is a nuclear receptor involved in the repression of inflammatory processes in the hepatointestinal tract. Here we report that LRH-1 is expressed in macrophages and induced by the Th2 cytokine IL-13 via a mechanism involvi ...

Obesity is associated with a chronic low-grade inflammation that predisposes to insulin resistance and the development of type 2 diabetes. In this metabolic context, gastrointestinal (GI) candidiasis is common. We recently demonstrated that the PPAR gamma ...
