We study the drainage of a viscous liquid film coating the outside of a solid horizontal cylinder, where gravity acts vertically. We focus on the limit of large Ohnesorge numbers Oh, where inertia is negligible compared to viscous effects. We first study t ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) generate motion resembling natural muscles in reliability, adaptability, elongation, and frequency of operation. They are highly attractive in implantable soft robots or artificial organs. However, many applications of ...

The high-efficiency silicon heterojunction (SHJ) technology is now perceived mature enough to enter the Giga-Watt manufacturing scale with several players around the globe. The growth of the SHJ technology requires confidence from manufacturers, investors, ...

The integration of passivating contacts based on a highly doped polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) layer on top of a thin silicon oxide (SiOx) layer has been identified as the next step to further increase the conversion efficiency of current mainstream cry ...

The work demonstrated in this thesis represent the path towards developing the large-scale fabrication of two-dimensional nanoporous membrane devices and use thereof as platforms to study nanoscale physics of water and ion flow through confined channels. M ...

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess remarkable optoelectronic properties which are unique and tunable based on composition and thickness. These materials are posed to revolutionize ultrathin devices across many fields inclu ...

Understanding grain morphology and kinetics of solid-phase crystallization is important for controlling the functional properties of polycrystalline materials. Here, in situ coherent X-ray diffraction imaging and transmission electron microscopy elucidate ...

The objective of this PhD thesis is the development of a microfluidic platform for the real-time measurements of the mechanical properties of biological analytes at the single entity level. The systems developed for these purposes consist of piezoelectrica ...

Large-scale deployment of thin-film photovoltaics will be facilitatedthrough earth-abundant components. Herein, selective area epitaxyand lateral overgrowth epitaxy are explored for the growth of zincphosphide (Zn3P2), a promising earth-abundant absorber. ...

Atomically thin (2D) nanoporous membranes are an excellent platform for a broad scope of academic research. Their thickness and intrinsic ion selectivity (demonstrated for example in molybdenum disulfide-MoS2) make them particularly attractive for single-m ...

Integrated wearable electronics capable of providing biophysical information on complex and dynamic systems have attracted high interest in diverse fields such as healthcare, gaming and robotics. Wearable sensors can create artificial, electronic skins wit ...

Linear optics based nanoscopy previously reached resolution beyond the diffraction limit, illuminating samples in the visible light regime while allowing light to interact with freely moving metallic nanoparticles. However, the hydrodynamics governing the ...

Recently, microresonator-based dissipative Kerr soliton frequency combs ( "soliton microcomb " ) have emerged as miniaturized optical frequency combs. So far, soliton microcombs have been realized in many CMOS-compatible material platforms including silico ...

We report the first demonstration of fully-vertical power MOSFETs on 6.6-μm-thick GaN grown on a 6-inch Si substrate by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). A robust fabrication method was developed based on a selective and local removal of the ...

The effects of extreme radiation levels on the electrical resistivity of metal thin films made of copper were studied by means of electrical measurements and post irradiation imaging. Different 3x3 mm(2) chips were produced by depositing 500 nm of meander ...

Caenorhabditis elegans is one of the most attractive model organisms in biomedical research for understanding human diseases and for drug testing at a whole-organism level, since many biological pathways and genes have been conserved between itself and hum ...

Nature and technical applications abound with thin viscous flows, ranging from the lava flow on volcanoes to the lubricating layer around confined bubbles in the microchannels of Lab-on-a-Chip devices. Countless are the examples where coating flows arise i ...

Cyanine dyes are organic semiconductor compounds with light absorption and emission properties useful for emerging technologies such as solar cells and light-emitting devices. The characteristics of these materials in the solid state depend on their organi ...

Capsules are often employed to prolong the shelf-life of active ingredients such as many drugs, food additives, or cosmetic substances because they delay their oxidation or prevent interactions with molecules contained in the surrounding. If designed prope ...

We present electron- and hole-selective passivating contacts based on wet-chemically grown interfacial SiOx and overlying in-situ doped silicon carbide (SiCx) deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. After annealing at 850 degrees C, excelle ...
