In converter-based grids (CBGs) without support from the main grid or synchronous generators, grid-forming converters (GFMs) are responsible for sustaining frequency and voltage stability. However, disturbances or load variations frequently lead to frequency and voltage deviations, and the operating point (OP) of GFM may not align with the desired stable state. Under severe faults, current-limiting actions may be triggered, potentially leading to instability. This paper proposes a Port-Hamiltonian (PH) fram

Estimating the 6-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) pose of a spacecraft from a single image is critical for autonomous operations like in-orbit servicing and space debris removal. Existing state-of-the-art methods often rely on iterative Perspective-n-Point (PnP)-based algorithms, which are computationally intensive and ill-suited for real-time deployment on resource-constrained edge devices. To overcome these limitations, we propose FastPose-ViT, a Vision Transformer (ViT)-based architecture that directly regresse

In this work, we design and experimentally demonstrate in the microwave range a robust metamaterial waveguide, which is formed at the boundary between two locally resonant chiral metamaterials with opposite chirality. We show that the interface states at such boundary are inherently robust to disorder in both the position and resonance frequency of subwavelength resonators. Moreover, we quantitatively demonstrate the superiority of the proposed subwavelength waveguiding over previously proposed designs, inc

Locally-resonant sonic metamaterials refer to synthetic acoustic matter composed of artificial acoustic “atoms”, generally passive, and of subwavelength sizes, that are capable of resonantly interacting with an external acoustic wave, and manipulate it in ways that are not directly available using natural bulk materials. Such artificial 3D materials, or their 2D analogs called metasurfaces, have led to extraordinary physical phenomena including negative refraction, subwavelength focusing, guiding or absorpt

A probabilistic interpretation of model predictive control is presented, enabling extensions to multiple coordinate systems. The resulting controller follows a minimal intervention principle, by learning and retrieving movements through the coordination of several frames of reference. When combined with a generative model, the approach can be used in various human-robot applications that are discussed in the paper.

It was noticed long time ago that the dielectric permittivity of BaTiO3 single crystals in the rhombohedral phase varies from observation to observation, but the microstructure mechanism behind this phenomenon remained unclear. We show that the variations in susceptibility can be related to the variable domain structure introduced by different pre-treatments at higher temperatures: Electrical depoling at room temperature leads to nano-sized domains and ultrahigh susceptibility in rhombohedral phase, whereas

Within the last years, an increasing number of studies have been carried out in the field of acoustic metamaterials. These artificial composite materials aim at achieving new macroscopic properties, like negative refraction, that are not readily present in nature. In analogy to electromagnetics, where such concepts are more mature, a novel concept of artificial acoustic transmission line has recently been reported, which presents such artificial behavior. In this article, the design of the proposed transmis

Today's supply networks consist of a certain amount of logistics objects that are enabled to interact with each other and to decide autonomously upon their next steps: in other words, they exhibit a certain degree of autonomous cooperation. Therefore, modern logistics research regards them as complex adaptive logistics systems. In order to analyze evolving dynamics and underlying implications for the respective systems' behavior as well as the potential outcomes resulting from the interaction between autono

A new MATLAB toolbox for computing eigenvalues and invariant subspaces of Hamiltonian and skew-Hamiltonian matrices is described. Based on orthogonal symplectic decompositions, the implemented algorithms are both numerically backward stable and structure-preserving. It will be demonstrated how this toolbox can be used to address a number of tasks in systems and control theory, including some model reduction methods and the computation of the H ∞ norm. © 2005 IEEE.

Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) is an emerging wireless physical layer technology that uses a very large bandwidth. We are interested in finding the design objectives of the medium access (MAC, namely, power control and scheduling) and routing protocols of a multi-hop, best-effort, UWB network. Our objective is to maximize flow rates (more precisely, log-utility of flow rates) given node power constraints. The specificity of UWB is expressed by the linear dependence between rate and signal-to-noise ratio at the recei

We present an extension of a 2D cartesian electromagnetic and thermal model to achieve the optimal control of an industrial induction heating system. The control variables are the frequency and the power. We explain how to derive the discrete optimal control algorithm and show the numerical results we obtained for a specific case.

Robotic ground vehicles are mechanisms that use gravity and contact forces with the ground to perform motion. They can either be wheeled, tracked or legged. In this thesis we will focus on n-wheeled vehicles able to perform ground following motion with all the wheels maintaining contact at the same time. The main goal of this work is to establish the implication of the topological architecture of the vehicle mechanism on criteria such as climbing skills, robustness, ground clearance, weight, power consumpti

An analytical approach allowing modelling transient phenomena in pipes, valves, surge tanks and Francis turbines based on impedance method is developed. These models are implemented in a software called “SIMSEN”, which simulates the behaviour of complex applications in the domain of adjustable speed drives and electrical power networks. This program is based on a modular structure, which enables the numerical simulation of transient modes of systems exhibiting arbitrary topologies. The numerical simulation
