Information theory has allowed us to determine the fundamental limit of various communication and algorithmic problems, e.g., the channel coding problem, the compression problem, and the hypothesis testing problem. In this work, we revisit the assumptions ...

A key challenge across many disciplines is to extract meaningful information from data which is often obscured by noise. These datasets are typically represented as large matrices. Given the current trend of ever-increasing data volumes, with datasets grow ...

Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control is a fundamental control paradigm that is studied in various fields such as engineering, computer science, economics, and neuroscience. It involves controlling a system with linear dynamics and imperfect observations ...

Hand gestures are one of the most natural and expressive way for humans to convey information, and thus hand gesture recognition has become a research hotspot in the human-machine interface (HMI) field. In particular, biological signals such as surface ele ...

We consider the problem of compressing an information source when a correlated one is available as side information only at the decoder side, which is a special case of the distributed source coding problem in information theory. In particular, we consider ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

Quantum random number generators (QRNGs) are a burgeoning technology used for a variety of applications, including modern security and encryption systems. Typical methods exploit an entropy source combined with an extraction or bit generation circuit in or ...

Since the birth of Information Theory, researchers have defined and exploited various information measures, as well as endowed them with operational meanings. Some were born as a "solution to a problem", like Shannon's Entropy and Mutual Information. Other ...

This paper presents explicit solutions for two related non-convex information extremization problems due to Gray and Wyner in the Gaussian case. The first problem is the Gray-Wyner network subject to a sum-rate constraint on the two private links. Here, ou ...

We study the existence and propagation of singularities of the solution to a one-dimensional linear stochastic wave equation driven by an additive Gaussian noise that is white in time and colored in space. Our approach is based on a simultaneous law of the ...

Network information theory studies the communication of information in a network and considers its fundamental limits. Motivating from the extensive presence of the networks in the daily life, the thesis studies the fundamental limits of particular network ...

Wyner's common information is a measure that quantifies and assesses the commonality between two random variables. Based on this, we introduce a novel two-step procedure to construct features from data, referred to as Common Information Components Analysis ...

Due to conservative approaches in construction design and practice, infrastructure often has hidden reserve capacity. When quantified, this reserve has potential to improve decisions related to asset management. Field measurements, collected through load t ...

This paper considers an additive Gaussian noise channel with arbitrarily distributed finite variance input signals. It studies the differential entropy of the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimator and provides a new lower bound which connects the diff ...

A class of deep Boltzmann machines is considered in the simplified framework of a quenched system with Gaussian noise and independent entries. The quenched pressure of a K-layers spin glass model is studied allowing interactions only among consecutive laye ...

We present a general method for imputing missing information in the Worldwide Patent Statistical Database (PATSTAT) and make the resulting datasets publicly available. The PATSTAT database is the de facto standard for academic research using patent data. C ...

Multi-server single-message private information retrieval is studied in the presence of side information. In this problem, K independent messages are replicatively stored at N non-colluding servers. The user wants to privately download one message from the ...

The single-server multi-message private information retrieval with side information problem is studied for general cases. In this problem, K independent messages are stored at a single server. One user initially has M messages as side information and wants ...

Coding techniques have been well studied and used for improving communication quality by combating noise and mitigating interference. Recently, it has been shown that the same coding techniques can also be exploited to further improve communication perform ...

Uncertainty presents a problem for both human and machine decision-making. While utility maximization has traditionally been viewed as the motive force behind choice behavior, it has been theorized that uncertainty minimization may supersede reward motivat ...
