Two severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques of simple shear extrusion (SSE) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were employed to process an extruded Mg -6Gd -3Y -1.5Ag (wt%) alloy at 553 K for 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes. The microstructural evolutions ...

Bio-based resins, obtained from renewable raw materials, are a more sustainable alternative to oil-based resins for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The incorporation of lignin in those resins has the potential to enhance their performance. This ...

In infinite dimensions, many-body systems of pairwise interacting particles provide exact analytical benchmarks for the features of amorphous materials, such as the stress--strain curve of glasses under quasistatic shear. Here, instead of global shear, we ...

The onset of earthquakes along crustal faults, the triggering of slab avalanches or the break of a wine glass are all serious problems driven by the propagation of a dynamic rupture front. Our physical understanding of this ubiquitous phenomenon is however ...

The compressive kinking behavior of non-slender unidirectional glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) specimens has been analyzed by finite element (FE) models. The experimentally observed imperfections, including the initial fiber waviness throughout the e ...

This paper focuses on the main issues discussed during a session on the impact of thermohydromechanical behavior of soils on thermoactive geotechnical systems, and how they could affect the performance of thermoactive geotechnical systems. Both soil behavi ...

Highly concentrated suspensions of silica particles present shear thickening properties, shifting from a low to a high viscosity state, instantly and reversibly at a critical shear rate. Their viscosity increases by up to 3 orders of magnitude, changing fr ...

We demonstrated the localisation of impacts in orthotropic carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials to within a few centimetres, using a sparse array of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. This type of sensor is easily embedded in composit ...

Elastic fundamental frequency is a key-parameter of simplified seismic design and vulnerability assessment methods. Empirical relationships exist in codes to estimate this frequency but they miss experimental data to validate them accounting for national f ...

We report experimental results related to the dam-break problem for viscoplastic fluids. Using image processing techniques, we were able to accurately reconstruct the free-surface evolution of fixed volumes of fluid suddenly released a plane. We used Carbo ...

This paper presents a geomechanical model that was developed to investigate the behaviour of a natural slope located on the bank of the Rhine between the towns of Stein and Mumpf in Switzerland. The slope, affected by a large landslide, constitutes a relev ...

In composite processing, a compressible dry fiber preform is in many cases impregnated by a molten polymeric matrix. The impregnated part is sometimes used as produced, but most often it requires a reheating step before stamping, flow molding or even paint ...
