Ohmic H-mode discharges in the Tokamak Configuration Variable (TCV) have recently been heated for the first time by electron cyclotron (EC) waves at the 3rd harmonic (X3) at full power. New edge localized mode (ELM) behaviour has been found, with larger am ...

The Helimak experiment produces a toroidal plasma with a helical magnetic field. A simulation-experiment comparison of turbulence in this device is presented, focusing on parameter regimes in which the turbulence is dominated by interchange modes with k(pa ...

The current status of the ITER magnetics diagnostic is summarised. The various risks are discussed on the basis of when they could be present during ITER operation and appropriate mitigation is reviewed. An implementation risk or common mode operation fail ...

For the ITER project it is clear that steps have to be taken in order to avoid or mitigate type-I ELMs when operating in the standard H-mode scenario. Otherwise, divertor power loads induced by intrinsic ELMs will result in an intolerably short divertor li ...

There is an increasing body of evidence that the energy lost from diverted tokamak plasmas due to edge localized mode (ELM) activity may not be confined solely to deposition on divertor components. Plasma-facing surfaces in the main confinement chamber als ...

This paper aims to contribute both to the ongoing process of scrape-off layer code-experiment and code-code benchmarking. Results are presented from SOLPS5 simulations of two high power JET H-modes with similar magnetic configuration, concentrating in the ...

In this paper, two simplified models of edge localized mode (ELM) power exhaust are developed, one based on the kinetic and the other on the fluid treatment of parallel losses. These models are found to capture many (though not all) of the salient features ...

Using infra-red (IR) thermography, power loads onto the MKII Gas-Box divertor targets have been investigated in Type-I ELMy H-Mode plasmas at JET in medium current discharges (I-p = 2.6MA and B-T = 2.7 T). Heat fluxes are calculated from the measured diver ...

An integrated radiative high performance scenario has been established at ASDEX Upgrade based on simultaneous feedback control of the average divertor neutral particle and power flux in combination with a high, pellet induced frequency of edge localized mo ...

Analysis of the type-l ELM power load asymmetries using infra-red thermography and target current measurements is performed ASDEX Upgrade Upper Single Null and JET DOC-L type-I ELMy H-Mode discharges with 'normal' and, reversed' field direction, i.e. with t ...

Empirical estimates indicate that the transient divertor power load induced by type-I ELMs in the standard H-mode ITER scenario might result in intolerably short target life times. Significant experimental effort has been put on the exploration of recipes ...

Numerical simulations of electron temperature gradient (ETG) turbulence are presented that characterize the ETG fluctuation spectrum, establish limits to the validity of the adiabatic ion model often employed in studying ETG turbulence, and support the ten ...

This report summarizes Type I edge localized mode (ELM) dynamics measurements from a number of tokamaks, including ASDEX-Upgrade, DIII-D, JET, JT-60U and MAST, with the goal of providing guidance and insight for the development of ELM simulation and modell ...
