Ultra High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) is increasingly popular for new structural designs thanks to its high resistance both in tension and compression. When UHPFRC is complemented with steel reinforcing bars or prestressin ...

In this work we perform a neutron Bragg edge tomography of stainless steel 316L additive manufacturing samples, one as built via standard laser powder bed fusion, and one using the novel three-dimensional (3D) laser shock peening technique. First, we consi ...

Exposure of concrete to the atmosphere changes the microstructure of the cement paste. However, knowledge about the alteration of the porosity due to drying is typically not considered in deterioration processes of the hardened cement paste. The purpose of ...

Current advances in ultrafast electron microscopy make it possible to combine optical pumping of a nanostructure and electron beam probing with sub-Angstrom and femtosecond spatiotemporal resolution. We present a theory predicting that this technique can r ...

The strong Ising spin-orbit coupling in certain two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides can profoundly affect the superconducting state in few-layer samples. For example, in NbSe2, this effect combines with the reduced dimensionality to stabilize ...

In this paper, compacts of synthetic calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) with 0.8-1.5 calcium-to-silicon ratio (Ca/Si) and 30-80% porosity were prepared by one-direction cold pressing. The Young's modulus and the creep of C-S-H compacts were measured by micro ...

Proportioning the dosage of Ground Calcium Carbonates (GCC) in cementitious materials, beyond current normative levels, is one of the most promising ways towards sustainability of mortar and concrete technology. Performance parameters such as the water/bin ...

Treatment by accelerated carbonation has been widely studied to enhance the quality of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and hence the performance of new concrete produced with the RCA. This is often ascribed to the densification of RCA. This study invest ...

Bed-joint structural repointing is a widely used strengthening technique in historic masonry constructions, particularly in applications where the material appearance needs to be preserved. Despite its wide use, limited research is available on the effecti ...

The use of cement and concrete, among the most widely used man-made materials, is under scrutiny. Owing to their large-scale use, production of cement and concrete results in substantial emission of greenhouse gases and places strain on the availability of ...

Continuous and reliable cardiac function monitoring could improve medication adherence in patients at risk of heart failure. This work presents an innovative implantable Fiber Bragg Grating-based soft sensor designed to sense mechanical cardiac activity. T ...

Fly ash-based geopolymers are being developed as sustainable alternate binders for producing concrete. The consistent production of a stable geopolymeric binder suitable for use in structural applications from alkaline activation of low-calcium fly ash was ...

In the past 20 years, the growing interest in deep geo-reservoirs for purposes such as carbon storage, waste water disposal, or geothermal energy exploitation have led to large-volume fluid injections into the upper continental crust. These fluid injection ...

The production of enantiopure materials and molecules is of uttermost relevance in research and industry in numerous contexts, ranging from nonlinear optics to asymmetric synthesis. In the context of the latter, dehalogenation, which is an essential reacti ...

Understanding the behaviour of soil-structure interfaces is critical for addressing the analysis and design of energy geostructures. In this study, the interface failure mechanism of energy piles (where a shear band is detached from the surrounding soil th ...

The occurrence of cracking due to alkali silica reaction (ASR) affects the service life of concrete structures. The dissolution of silica-containing minerals within aggregates causes the formation of ASR products, which fill macroscopic cracks and cause th ...

In concrete structures, opened cracks contribute significantly to the transfer of shear and normal stresses through the contact forces occurring between fractured surfaces. Such contact forces are due to protruding asperities, engaged by interlocking and f ...

A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted in the present work towards investigating bio-cemented geo-materials which extends from sample preparation, to microstructural inspection and mechanical behaviour characterization. We suggest a new way to induce “ce ...
