Combining dynamic models and measurements into a consistent plasma state estimate is an important challenge for ITER and DEMO, due to the inherent limitations regarding diagnostic coverage in a nuclear fusion reactor environment. In this work, a model-base ...

The pre-thermal quench (pre-TQ) dynamics of a pure deuterium ( D 2 ) shattered pellet injection (SPI) into a 3 MA / 7 MJ JET H-mode plasma is studied via 3D non-linear MHD modelling with the JOREK code. The interpretative modelling captures the overall evo ...

The quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime, formerly known as either type-II ELM or small ELM regime is studied in ASDEX Upgrade. The regime is a natural type-I ELM-free H-mode. The operational space of QCE discharges in ASDEX Upgrade with respect to their ...

Superconductivity in van der Waals materials, such as NbSe2 and TaS2, is fundamentally novel due to the effects of dimensionality, crystal symmetries, and strong spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we perform tunnel spectroscopy on NbSe2 by utilizing MoS2 o ...

The study describes a comprehensive methodology to evaluate X-Ray micro-computed tomography data from sand samples and to characterize their 3D microstructural properties. Fine and medium-grained sands are analyzed in their natural and bio-cemented states. ...

Runaway electrons (REs) created during tokamak disruptions pose a threat to the reliable operation of future larger machines. Experiments using shattered pellet injection (SPI) have been carried out at the JET tokamak to investigate ways to prevent their g ...

The present paper is concerned with the mechanically extremely sensitive reflection switching concept of a free-space wave impinging on an array of dielectric or semiconductor pillars. Splitting the pillars of a 2D periodic array in its resonant reflection ...

This paper presents an in-depth DC characterization of a 22 nm FDSOI CMOS technology down to deep cryogenic temperature, i.e., 2.95 K. The impact of the back-gate voltage (V-back) on device performance, i.e., threshold voltage (V-T) and carrier transport, ...

The stepped-pressure equilibrium code (SPEC) (Hudson et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 19, issue 11, 2012, 112502) is extended to allow the computation of multi-region, relaxed magnetohydrodynamics (MRxMHD) equilibria at prescribed toroidal current profile. Toro ...

The strong Ising spin-orbit coupling in certain two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides can profoundly affect the superconducting state in few-layer samples. For example, in NbSe2, this effect combines with the reduced dimensionality to stabilize ...

Imaginary time path-integral (PI) simulations that account for nuclear quantum effects (NQE) beyond the harmonic approximation are increasingly employed together with modern electronic-structure calculations. Existing PI methods are applicable to molecules ...

The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions R(D) = B((B) over bar -> D tau(-)(nu) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar -> Dl(-)(nu) over bar (e)) and R(D*) = B((B) over bar -> Dtau(-)(nu) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar -> Dtau(-)(nu) over bar ...

We study the pattern formation of a thin film flowing under an inclined planar substrate. The phenomenon is studied in the context of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability using the lubrication equation. Inspired by experimental observations, we numerically stud ...

Quantum ESPRESSO is an open-source distribution of computer codes for quantum-mechanical materials modeling, based on density-functional theory, pseudopotentials, and plane waves, and renowned for its performance on a wide range of hardware architectures, ...

We develop new tools for isolating CFTs using the numerical bootstrap. A "cutting surface" algorithm for scanning OPE coefficients makes it possible to find islands in high-dimensional spaces. Together with recent progress in large-scale semidefinite progr ...

We present the first model-independent measurement of the CKM unitarity triangle angle phi(3) using B-+/--> D(K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)) K-+/- decays, where D indicates either a D-0 or (D) over bar (0) meson. Measurements of the strong-phase difference of the ...

The expansion history of the Universe between the end of inflation and the onset of radiation-domination (RD) is currently unknown. If the equation of state during this period is stiffer than that of radiation, w > 1/3, the gravitational wave (GW) backgrou ...

We present the first steps to develop radiation sensors based on the graphene field effect transistor technology. Such a sensor exploits the ambipolar behavior of graphene near its Dirac point and it is not dependent on collecting charges, but it senses io ...

Extremely large nonsaturating magnetoresistance has recently been reported for a large number of both topologically trivial and nontrivial materials. Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain the observed magnetotransport properties, yet without a ...

The mechanical response of modern alloys results from a complex interplay between existing microstructure and its evolution with time under stress. To unravel these processes, in situ approaches intrinsically have a critical advantage to explore the basic ...
