Atomistic simulations performed with a family of model potential with tunable hardness have proven to be a great tool for advancing the understanding of wear processes at the asperity level. They have been instrumental in finding a critical length scale, w ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

With the development of modern medical techniques, the application of orthopedic implants has been continually increasing in recent years. Passive materials, such as Ti and its alloys as well as CoCrMo alloys, are widely used in artificial joints due to th ...

Sterilization is a prerequisite for biomedical devices before contacting the human body. It guarantees the lack of infection by eliminating microorganisms (i.e., bacteria, spores and fungi). It constitutes the last fabrication process of a biomedical devic ...

Flexure-based mechanisms have become state-of-the-art solutions for the design of high-precision mechanisms, free from friction wear, backlash, and lubrication. These properties which are necessary for applications in ultraclean or harsh environments, neve ...

In this paper, transient granular flows are examined both numerically and experimentally. Simulations are performed using the continuous three-dimensional (3-D) granular model introduced in Daviet & Bertails-Descoubes (ACM Trans. Graph., vol. 35, no. 4, 20 ...

Friction and wear occur at every interface between solid materials. In the design of mechanical devices, it is desirable to be able to quantify and control the amount of friction and wear, as well as predict their evolution with time. ``Tribology'' is the ...

Frictional contacts lead to the formation of a surface layer called the third body, consisting of wear particles and structures resulting from their agglomerates. Its behavior and properties at the nanoscale control the macroscopic tribological performance ...

The use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations has led to promising results to unravel the atomistic origins of adhesive wear, and in particular for the onset of wear at nanoscale surface asperities. However, MD simulations come with a high computational c ...

When two rough surfaces slide against each other, two main behaviors can be observed at the asperity level: A ductile behavior where the asperities tend to smooth out or a brittle behavior where the asperities detach and form debris. Recently, a critical l ...

The introduction of modular design in total hip arthroplasty has enabled the use of different materials in one single configuration and the adjustment of the prosthesis to the patient's body, and facilitated medical revisions. However, modularity leads to ...

Tribocorrosion of passivating metals is a dynamic phenomenon causing degradation of materials by a combination of mechanical wear and electrochemical dissolution. The mechanical action typically produces a local removal of particles, metal as well as oxide ...

Modular hip joint implants were introduced in arthroplasty medical procedures because they facilitate the tailoring of patients’ anatomy, the use of different materials in one single configuration, as well as medical revision. However, in certain cases, su ...

This study presents an improvement of an existing tribocorrosion model developed for passive CoCrMo alloys. This model is based on an empirical formalism established by Duncan Dowson in his pioneering works on the relation between wear and elasto-hydrodyna ...

The demand for metal alloys with superior structural performance in industrial applications continues to increase, as does the need for more-energy efficient materials and methods. Many materials that are otherwise attractive for structural applications ar ...

Understanding the interactions between biomedical alloys and body fluids is of importance for the successful and safe performance of implanted devices. Albumin, as the first protein that comes in contact with an implant surface, can determine the biocompat ...

Tribocorrosion, as the interaction between mechanical wear and electrochemical corrosion, has been found to be the main problem causing the failure and limiting the lifetime of metal-on-metal artificial hip joints. Better understanding of the tribocorrosio ...

Self-lubricating, gold matrix composite coatings were produced by electrochemical codeposition of carbon nanocapsules filled with ionic liquid (IL) from a colloidal galvanic bath on a nickel electrode. The tribological response of the composite coatings wa ...

Ni-P electroless coatings are widely applied for protection of magnesium alloys and other materials due to the low energy consumption of the process and high resistance to corrosion and wear, properties that can be improved with the incorporation of partic ...

All mechanical systems, naturally occurring or human-produced, are subjected to friction and wear at the interface of solid constituents. Large portions of energy dissipation and loss of material, in every-day life and industrial applications alike, are du ...
