The thesis explores the issue of fairness in the real-time (RT) control of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) hosted in active distribution networks (ADNs) in the presence of uncertainties by proposing and experimentally validating appropriate control ...

A key challenge across many disciplines is to extract meaningful information from data which is often obscured by noise. These datasets are typically represented as large matrices. Given the current trend of ever-increasing data volumes, with datasets grow ...

This thesis presents a comprehensive investigation of the interaction between precipitation and wind-induced erosion and deposition of snow on Arctic sea ice. The study uses observations from the 2019-2020 MOSAiC expedition and makes use of the 3D snow cov ...

Higher-order asymptotics provide accurate approximations for use in parametric statistical modelling. In this thesis, we investigate using higher-order approximations in two-specific settings, with a particular emphasis on the tangent exponential model. ...

Cavitation bubbles, extensively investigated in fluid mechanics, present enduring challenges in hydraulic machinery, while holding considerable potential for practical applications in biomedicine and sonochemistry. Despite more than a century of research, ...

In certain cases of astronomical data analysis, the meaningful physical quantity to extract is the ratio R between two data sets. Examples include the lensing ratio, the interloper rate in spectroscopic redshift samples, and the decay rate of gravitational ...

Ternary-based titanium nitride (TiN) thin films have drawn attention toward rational applications due to their wear resistance, high hardness, and corrosion resistance. The influence of Mo content on the structural, tribo-logical, and mechanical properties ...

Oxide inclusions are inevitably present in steel as a direct consequence of the steelmaking process; as a result, a cubic centimetre of modern steel will generally contain about a million of these hard and brittle micrometre-sized ceramic particles. Inclus ...

Building on an analogy to ductile fracture mechanics, we quantify the size of debris particles created during adhesive wear. Earlier work suggested a linear relation between tangential work and wear debris volume, assuming that the debris size is proportio ...

This study presents an experimental work on dynamic pressures at the bottom of a lined plunge pool that receives overflow rectangular impinging jets and aims at improving the design criteria for pool slabs. The experiments were conducted in a fairly large ...

Searching indirectly for physics beyond the standard model requires careful investigation of collider data and methodological advances that are the subject of this thesis. In the first part, we develop a multivariate analysis tool to compare data with the ...

Fluctuating bottom-pressures on stepped chutes are relevant for the spillway design. An abrupt slope reduction causes a local alteration of the bottom-pressure development. Little information is available regarding the air–water flow properties near an abr ...

Spillways are a requirement for dams’ safety, mainly preventing overtopping during floods. A common spillway solution involves plunging jets, which dissipate a considerable flow energy in the plunge pool. Energy dissipation has to occur in a controlled man ...

There has been a recent surge of interest in the study of asymptotic reconstruction performance in various cases of generalized linear estimation problems in the teacher-student setting, especially for the case of i.i.d standard normal matrices. Here, we g ...

We study the problem of learning unknown parameters of stochastic dynamical models from data. Often, these models are high dimensional and contain several scales and complex structures. One is then interested in obtaining a reduced, coarse-grained descript ...

Etching single-layer graphene to incorporate a high pore density with sub-angstrom precision in molecular differentiation is critical to realize the promising high-flux separation of similar-sized gas molecules, e.g., CO2 from N2. However, rapid etching ki ...

Gait speed is a reliable outcome measure across multiple diagnoses, recognized as the 6th vital sign. The focus of the present study was on assessment of gait speed in long-term real-life settings with the aim to: (1) demonstrate feasibility in large cohor ...

Hydrodynamic cavitation is one of the major phase change phenomena and occurs with a sudden decrease in the local static pressure within a fluid. With the emergence of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), high-speed microfluidic devices have attracted co ...

Statistical models for extreme values are generally derived from non-degenerate probabilistic limits that can be used to approximate the distribution of events that exceed a selected high threshold. If convergence to the limit distribution is slow, then th ...

This thesis focuses on two kinds of statistical inference problems in signal processing and data science. The first problem is the estimation of a structured informative tensor from the observation of a noisy tensor in which it is buried. The structure com ...
