Unmyelinated fibers account for a remarkable fraction of the peripheral nervous system and their activity is linked to many autonomic and somatic functions. While electrical recording of such activity from human-sized peripheral nerves holds significant po ...

Engineered grafts constitute an alternative to autologous transplant for repairing severe peripheral nerve injuries. However, current clinically available solutions have substantial limitations and are not suited for the repair of long nerve defects. A nov ...

Transcranial (electro)magnetic stimulation (TMS) is currently the method of choice to non-invasively induce neural activity in the human brain. A single transcranial stimulus induces a time-varying electric field in the brain that may evoke action potentia ...

We recently discovered a novel role for neuregulin-1 (Nrg1) signaling in mediating spontaneous regenerative processes and functional repair after spinal cord injury (SCI). We revealed that Nrg1 is the molecular signal responsible for spontaneous functional ...

Peripheral nerves are anisotropic and heterogeneous neural tissues. Their complex physiology restricts realistic in vitro models, and high resolution and selective probing of axonal activity. Here, we present a nerve-on-a-chip platform that enables rapid e ...

Neuroimaging techniques aim at revealing the anatomy and functional organisation of cerebral structures. Over the past decades, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has revolutionized our understanding of human cerebral physiology through its abili ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a severing of axonal connections that leads to permanent sensorimotor deficits. In cases of incomplete injury, rehabilitation paradigms have been reported to be successful in improving behavioral outcome in humans with S ...

The corpus callosum establishes the anatomical continuity between the 2 hemispheres and coordinates their activity. Using histological tracing, single axon reconstructions, and diffusion tractography, we describe a callosal projection to n caudatus and put ...

Cementless total hip arthroplasty is a highly successful and reliable procedure to restore joint function and reduce pain in patients with severe osteoarthritis. Nevertheless, despite the technical advances over the last decades in the development of cemen ...

Peripheral nerve regeneration following injury occurs spontaneously, but many of the processes require metabolic energy. The mechanism of energy supply to axons has not previously been determined. In the central nervous system, monocarboxylate transporter ...

Schizophrenia pathophysiology implies both abnormal redox control and dysconnectivity of the prefrontal cortex, partly related to oligodendrocyte and myelin impairments. As oligodendrocytes are highly vulnerable to altered redox state, we investigated the ...

To what extent, how and when axons respond to injury in the highly interconnected grey matter is poorly understood. Here we use two-photon imaging and focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy to explore, at synaptic resolution, the regrowth capacity o ...

The formation of myelin by Schwann cells (SCs) occurs via a series of orchestrated molecular events. We previously used global expression profiling to examine peripheral nerve myelination and identified the NAD(+)-dependent deacetylase Sir-two-homolog 2 (S ...

The present work was performed to determine the ability of neurotrophic factors to allow axonal regeneration across a 15-mm-long gap in the rat sciatic nerve. Synthetic nerve guidance channels slowly releasing NGF and GDNF were fabricated and sutured to th ...

Dorsal roots have a limited regeneration capacity after transection. To improve nerve regeneration, the growth-promoting effects of the neurotrophins nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) were evalua ...

Fibrin plays an important role in wound healing and regeneration, and enjoys widespread use in surgery and tissue engineering. The enzymatic activity of Factor XIIIa was employed to covalently incorporate exogenous bioactive peptides within fibrin during c ...
