How heterochromatin is established de novo in early embryos is unknown. A study now shows that the sequential recruitment of the key regulator JARID2 recruits PRC2.2 to H2AK119ub and ensures proper H3K27me2/3 deposition. This prevents premature enhancer ac ...

Soil microbiomes harbor unparalleled functional and phylogenetic diversity and are sources of novel metabolisms. However, extracting isolates with a targeted function from complex microbiomes is not straightforward, particularly if the associated phenotype ...

Lost Hammer Spring, located in the High Arctic of Nunavut, Canada, is one of the coldest and saltiest terrestrial springs discovered to date. It perennially discharges anoxic (

Nucleic acid sensing through pattern recognition receptors is critical for immune recognition of microbial infections. Microbial DNA is frequently methylated at the N-6 position of adenines (m6A), a modification that is rare in mammalian host DNA. We show ...

Arsenic (As) is simultaneously a ubiquitous and a toxic element. Arsenic is subject to bio-transformations catalyzed by microorganisms constituting the As biogeochemical cycle. The primordial Earth was devoid of oxygen, exposing life to the highly mobile a ...

Microbially-mediated methylation of arsenic (As) plays an important role in the As biogeochemical cycle, particularly in rice paddy soils where methylated As, generated microbially, is translocated into rice grains. The presence of the arsenite (As(III)) m ...

Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex disorder caused by a combination of genetic and non-genetic risk factors. In addition, an increasing evidence suggests that epigenetic mechanisms also accompany AD. Genetic and epigenetic factors are not ind ...

Nearly all the cells of an organism share the same DNA sequence or genome, and yet they show different phenotypes and carry out different functions. This diversity is made possible by a verity of molecular modifications acting on the DNA sequence that coll ...

Process understanding of microbial communities containing organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) is important for effective bioremediation of chlorinated ethenes. The impact of iron and sulfate reduction on cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE) and vinyl chloride ...

The deep terrestrial subsurface remains an environment where there is limited understanding of the extant microbial metabolisms. At Olkiluoto, Finland, a deep geological repository is under construction for the final storage of spent nuclear fuel. It is th ...

The specific interaction between DNA and proteins constitutes one of the crucial elements in the regulation of gene expression. This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of two microfluidic-based technologies called SMiLE-seq and FloChIP that ...

The telomeric long noncoding RNA TERRA has been implicated in regulating telomere maintenance by telomerase and homologous recombination, and in influencing telomeric protein composition during the cell cycle and the telomeric DNA damage response. TERRA tr ...

The integrity of the chromatin structure is essential to every process occurring within eukaryotic nuclei. However, there are no reliable tools to decipher the molecular composition of metaphase chromosomes. Here, we have applied infrared nanospectroscopy ...

The rate at which organic contaminants can be degraded in aquatic environments is not only dependent upon specific degrading bacteria, but also upon the composition of the microbial community, mass transfer of the contaminant, and abiotic processes that oc ...

SETDB1 (SET Domain Bifurcated histone lysine methyltransferase 1) is a key lysine methyltransferase (KMT) required in embryonic stem cells (ESCs), where it silences transposable elements and DNA repeats via histone H3 lysine 9 tri-methylation (H3K9me3), in ...

BACKGROUND: The KZFP/KAP1 (KRAB zinc finger proteins/KRAB-associated protein 1) system plays a central role in repressing transposable elements (TEs) and maintaining parent-of-origin DNA methylation at imprinting control regions (ICRs) during the wave of g ...

The KZFP/KAP1 (Krüppel associated box zinc finger proteins/KRAB-associated protein 1) complex is a transcriptional repressor that triggers the deposition of heterochromatin (H3K9me3) and DNA methylation. The main targets of the KZFP/KAP1 complex are transp ...

KRAB-containing zinc finger proteins (KRAB-ZFPs) are early embryonic controllers of transposable elements (TEs), which they repress with their cofactor KAP1 through histone and DNA methylation, a process thought to result in irreversible silencing. Using a ...

The methylation status of the O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) gene is an important predictive biomarker for benefit from alkylating agent therapy in glioblastoma. Recent studies in anaplastic glioma suggest a prognostic value for MGMT methyl ...

Microbes have successfully colonized the deep subsurface, thanks to their small size and their diverse metabolic activities. This part of the biosphere remains a terra incognita for microbiologists, containing innumerable unknown microbial species and proc ...
