Due to the increasing demands of today's fast-paced world, mental health concerns are on the rise, which necessitates innovative approaches to provide support to those in need. Open-domain conversational agents known as chatbots, offer a unique opportunit ...

Background: There has been an increase in interest in emotion in engineering and science ethics education. There is also evidence that emotional content in case studies may improve students’ learning and enhance awareness, understanding, and motivation con ...

Should we refer to boredom or boredoms? Research on the emotion of boredom sets itself apart from studies on other emotions by posing the question: is boredom a singular concept or does it have multiple facets? In this manuscript presenting empirical resea ...

The Component Process Model is a well-established framework describing an emotion as a dynamic process with five highly interrelated components: cognitive appraisal, expression, motivation, physiology and feeling. Yet, few empirical studies have systematic ...

The research community of dialog generation has been interested in incorporating emotional information into the design of open-domain dialog systems ever since neural networks (sequence-to-sequence models in particular) were adopted for modeling dialogs. T ...

Emotions are rich and complex experiences involving various behavioral and physiological responses. While many empirical studies have focused on discrete and dimensional representations of emotions, these representations do not fully reconcile with recent ...

A growing number of studies have focused on identifying cognitive processes that are modulated by interoceptive signals, particularly in relation to the respiratory or cardiac cycle. Considering the fundamental role of interoception in bodily self-consciou ...

Recent developments in speech emotion recognition (SER) often leverage deep neural networks (DNNs). Comparing and benchmarking different DNN models can often be tedious due to the use of different datasets and evaluation protocols. To facilitate the proces ...

Emotion recognition is usually achieved by collecting features (physiological signals, events, facial expressions, etc.) to predict an emotional ground truth. This ground truth is arguably unreliable due to its subjective nature. In this paper, we introduc ...

Affective inertia represents the lasting impact of transient emotions at one time point on affective state at a subsequent time point. Here we describe the neural underpinnings of inertia following negative emotions elicited by sad events in movies. Using ...

Adopting the perspective of another person is an important aspect of social cognition and has been shown to depend on multisensory signals from one's own body. Recent work suggests that interoceptive signals not only contribute to own-body perception and s ...

Positive-social emotions mediate one's cognitive performance, mood, well-being, and social bonds, and represent a critical variable within therapeutic settings. It has been shown that the upregulation of positive emotions in social situations is associated ...

Rhythmic auditory stimuli are known to elicit matching activity patterns in neural populations. Furthermore, recent research has established the particular importance of high-gamma brain activity in auditory processing by showing its involvement in auditor ...

Traditional techniques for emotion recognition have focused on the facial expression analysis only, thus providing limited ability to encode context that comprehensively represents the emotional responses. We present deep networks for context-aware emotion ...

The somatic marker hypothesis proposes that the cortical representation of visceral signals is a crucial component of emotional processing. No previous study has investigated the information flow among brain regions that process visceral information during ...

In this paper, we introduce our recent studies on human perception in audio event classification. In particular, the pre-trained model VGGish is used as feature extractor to process audio data, and DenseNet is trained by and used as feature extractor for o ...

Humans use a variety of modifiers to enrich communications with one another. While this is a deliberate subtlety in our language, the presence of modifiers can cause problems for emotion analysis by machines. Our research objective is to understand and com ...

The use of expressive Virtual Characters is an effective complementary means of communication for social networks offering multi-user 3D-chatting environment. In such context the facial expression channel offers a rich medium to translate the on-going emot ...

Cities are much more than just the background of our lives, or complex artefacts. They are the social field and the content over which we quarrel; the reason and the tool by which we co-operate. Cities are shaped in the form of our passions. Those passions ...

Understanding the extent to which humans perceive the emotional state of animals has both theoretical and practical implications. While recent studies indicate that natural selection has led to some convergence of emotion coding among vertebrate species (i ...
